Just fired my sharpening service for mutilating my three best sets of Morso blades. That reduces to Zero the number of entries on my list of local sharpening services. Although I would still send those guys my lawnmower if I had one.

So this guy down at the woodworkers' store says he can sharpen those blades like nobody before. All his chisels are shiny, you know that's a good sign.

BUT...he needs Specs. He learned his craft at the nuke labs and he likes Specs. I'm sure I saw specifications for sharpening Morso blades somewhere on the internet, complete with angles and measurements on a crisp looking PDF drawing. Can anybody help me with a link here?

OK, he needs Specs because he's thinking hollow grind and the lead-off profile from the tip is critical, he says. But please, just a link, no wars, thx.

Thanks Baer. I'll give him one chance on the worst set, then I'll tell Messenger you sent me.

The Dan-List Company in Denmark manufactures the MORSØ machines and blades. The tool steel used for the cutting edge on the MORSØ blade is formulated of Austrian steel with a Rockwell hardness of 64 and must be special ordered by Dan-List one year in advance of delivery. The cutting edge is attached to the tool's body and then carefully heat tempered with Dan-List's own secret process. The knife is then precision surface ground to thickness, hollow ground with the grinding wheel between 8" and 10" diameter at 30° to the face of the knife, then hand honed and deburred.

Didn't Morso used to use flat grind blades? Can I have my hollow ginds changed to flat next sharpening? Any disadvantage? Will a lot of material be lost?

as far as I know they have always hollow ground.

yes
Will a lot of material be lost?
very little useful life should be lost, but they do charge extra because they have to hog out the hollow space.

Any disadvantage?

no comment.

Morsø recommends that their blades be hollow ground.

In theory, the leading edge is narrower, thus sharper, than chisel ground.

However, because of the extreme taper, the edge has a tendency to “roll over” more quickly and thus dull the cutting edge more quickly. It, therefore, needs sharpening more frequently.

My blades are chisel ground (because of my screw up when I ordered them sharpened). From a practical standpoint, I have not noticed that they are any less sharp than hollow ground. I still get a clean, smooth, burr-less cut, and the blades last longer between sharpening.

More frequency of grinding, the faster you use up the blade, the sooner you go buy another. Consider the source, and what interest they have vested.

No body on the grumble is vested with an envelope being slipped in their back pocket, so the discussion of hollow vs. flat grinds on.

I simply ship my blades to Tech Mark and they return them ready to go in about 10 days. Costs me 15.00 to ship and 45.00 for the return done to Morso specs. They do a great job!

:D

not to hijack this to much...

Anyone know the sharpening specs. for the itw amp mini miter fillet cutter blades.

I bought three new sets of Morso blades over the last year and a half.

For whatever reason those new sets cut amazingly well compared to sets that have been sharpened even once by names we have seen here. Is that because of hollow ground, or perfect sharpening, or undiminished hardness, or what? I sure wish I knew.

But for now I'm up the creek until I a competent sharpening service.

I've got two usable shop Morsos and one paperweight, and the only time I have ever been able to set the wing angle to absolutely flat on any of them is with the brand new factory sharpened blades.

Then send them to Tech-Mark. They are the authorized US Retailer for Morso choppers and grind to Morso specs. They should come back in factory new condition.

The "General" angle of all blades that shear is 30degrees. 1/8" chisel to 147" riving shear for peeling logs into plywood.

I use Tech Mark. I bought a used Morsø, and the blades and been flat ground - they do charge more for a one-time return to hollow ground. Be sure and buy some cut-resistant gloves to wear when you remove and install the blades - when they come back from Tech Mark, they are wicked sharp!
