Spandrel frames

Kinda hard to find the cheapies these days. Of course you could always have the oval part made to match any moulding you want.

edit: Pat types faster.

Other end of the Earth (so to speak) but, San Diego Frames.....

frame is blown foam, but the spandral section is right up there
with Munn.

wait.. I just looked at the one in my office..... whole thing
is as good [looking].

Assuming you want something like a rectangular frame, with oval inset (for an oval artwork)? If so, this would seem easy enough to make up: Order an oval, make accompanying rectangle, cut a board to fit rectangle, cut out oval with router or scroll saw, mount oval frame over that opening.

I've made spandrel frames in the past, but it does involve hand-finishing.

I made the sprandrel by cutting an oval in 2.5mm MDF. You can do it on an manual oval matcutter using the square-cut setting. It doesn't make a neat cut, but as long as you can get nearly all the way though you can clean the cut up with sandpaper - gently rounding the edges. Then I cut another oval using a thickish cardboard. Bevel cut and larger than the MDF one to form a reveal. Matboard is OK, but greyboard with no facing paper is better. Then just glue the two oval together with PVA glue and place under a weight for a while. Laminating makes the spandrel very stable and not likely to curl. Good idea to seal the back with PVA too....

The sprandrel can be finished any way. Painted or gilded.

This made from three layers of greyboard. Top two layers are imitation leather effect, but could just as easily be gilded like the bottom layer
I'm not sure it is technically a spandrel. But whatever you call it the principle is the same.;) The glass is behind the sprandrel.

There is always the option of doing a 3/8" thick, MDF
Liner-Panel from Frank's Fabrics or Raphael's.
(both do them, and Frank is about 40 miles closer to you) :D
