I read the following on another forum that I belong to and just wondered if any one else had experienced this problem with XP update SP2?

"You might want to know that for those of us running Outlook Express, SP2 knocks out all our folders as well as the Address Book. I downloaded it and was okay till I shut down for the night and rebooted the next morning. I had no addresses, no records, no nothing. So after I had a nervous breakdown I recalled that Gateway has a restore feature, so I used that and got my life back."

I heard quite a bit about it on the Kim Komando show today. I never update anything until the second re-update comes out. I intend to wait until SP 2.01 before I update. I ain't no guinea pig.

Now I ask you: if this is true--that SP2 does indeed take out the folders/AddressBook---why on earth would MS release it???

Is this an aberration or a fact? (I'm not d/l it either until I'm sure.)

I was listening to a radio talk show with a local computer expert yesterday. I missed the question, but apparently somebody called in and asked about SP2.

The expert said it wasn't available yet and when it was, Microsoft would almost certainly charge for it. In the meantime, he advised listeners to ignore any notifications from MS or from their ISPs to download updates 'cause they're probably fraudulent.

He mentioned later that he's been traveling and away from the computer for about six weeks (an eternity in the computer world.)

(I think he should have done a little homework before he appeared on the show.)

Bill's post is worrisome. I have always found it very tricky (read: impossible for mortals) to back-up Outlook Express mail and folders.

Actually Ron you can backup your entire profile to a separate place on the drive. Then if something happens to your folders you can copy the profile back, log back in a there your is your stuff. This would include all changes you make to the desktop, icons, wallpaper, and such.

I have installed SP2 on over 40 machines so far, and haven't had this particular issue.

SP2 is indeed real, and is currently available if you run Windows Update. It is approximately 75mb and takes a while to install.

I highly recommend upgrading, especially for those on dialup - without the firewall benefit of a router.

Just ran the automatic update SP2 for XP Pro. It worked fine except that after the restart and closing the new security screen every thing stopped leaving me looking at my wallpaper and nothing else. I used CTRL ALT DEL to open the Task Manager and selected restart. Everything is now normal and updated.

I would advise anyone doing a major update such as SP2 to ensure a ghost image or at the least a Windows Restore point is done shortly before.
If you look up the known issues page it is basically a list of every program ever made!!! No problems for me though, several of the programs listed are on my machines and they're all good.
