Anyone know where we could get a black glossy or lacquer fillet? We selected a Studio fillet and didn't realize it was a dark gray rather than black and it may be a problem.

larson

larson 154BL is a 3/16" cap fillet.

Would adding a coat of varnish do the trick?

We try not to use chemicals, varnish etc. as there is no ventilation in the shop. In an extreme emergency we take it outside but prefer not to. And since we have to purchase it anyway why not get it glossy already?

I didn't think this was lacquer. I better go and dig out the sample. Also, we prefer a fillet that is 3/8" to 1/2" if available.

Could take it to an auto body shop and have them spray it. They spray lacquers all the time and it should be a simple task for them.

"take it to an auto body shop "

they can do this BUT, you will have to prepare the pieces(remove the wax coating--assume they are there!-- and 1000grit the surface) and stiill have the possibility of incompatible chemicals causing the new stuff to NOT bond (like get gator skin etc). a #### shoot

I guess we could but can't believe that there is no black lacquer fillet commercially available!

Guerrini JUST came out with high gloss lacquer fillets. Saw the add in the back of PFM. I bet they are the width you are looking for as well. I'd check them out.

High Gloss Krylon (not very smelly this way).....
some 3oz Dixie cups
latex gloves [Nytril is better]
paper towels or soft cloth [I prefer the PTs]

spray paint down the side of the cup with the spray button resting on the cup... direct contact.... till you have about a 1/4-1/2" (INCH not cup)

dip in towel and whip ONCE on the fillet. It will dry in under a minute because the carrier/propellant is now out of it. IF you need to, you can do it once more in about 15 minutes.
Yes, a brush works.. but why? End of project, throw cup and towels.

I just checked their website and see multi-colored glossy fillets (nice but probably hard to use). Since our phones are down I sent them an e-mail asking.

Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the directions. If we have no alternative we will do this - actually someone else will do this. My sensitive lungs still hurt from the last time we did something using spray/chemicals. As a matter of fact when I walk into the doorway of our shop and they have sprayed anything at all even on a different floor I start coughing. My employees hate that they can't get away with it ;-)!

Why not take the easy way out and just use Gloss Black E-Z Edge Fillet?

Is that the plastic ones that slip onto a mat? If so it won't work as it is going into a fabric wrapped liner with a thick lip. Thanks for the suggestion though.

It is kind of hard to believe that there is no source for a simple black lacquer fillet. Lacquer was out of favor for years but seems to be coming back. We may just have to resort to doing it ourselves.

Ah, gotcha. Sorry I didn't catch that part.

Get some Bonanza Wood BW30-X and make it into an 'enhancer' by ripping the 1/2" lacquer part off w/ your saw.

WHOA!!! Back that little fabric truck up a minute.

You didn't mention that it was for a fabric liner.......

Countess Plus Black (Reverse) Flexible Fillet from Frank's Fabric..... pH neutral, shiny black, easy to use and nothing looks as great with fabric as fabric.

Now why didn't I think of that yesterday before our order from Frank's was shipped??? Too late to back up the truck through as hopefully it is on its way to us.

Thanks for the suggestion. Will take a look at it when I get back to the shop and see if it will work with the frame (ornate black lacquer around fabric liner)

Are you kidding?!?! Fabric goes with anything... especially blk lacquer.

In case you didn't know...... when you place an order with Frank's.... don't call back 3 minutes later and expect it to be wrapped together......

I have ####### up once or twice and gotten an order rolled around the earlier order that is wrapped and tagged and ready to ship.

Get your ducks in a row before you call an eager beaver. :D
