My heart goes out to the family and friends of the Astronauts of the space craft Columbia. They are all my heroes!!!! God help them all through this ordeal and especially the little ones who need our love and prayers.

Sorry about the "Wink" at the end of my above message. Was not intended. sorry.

Aussie hearts also go out to the families and others associated with this tragedy!

It just seems like there are too many disasters happening lately. There were 8 people killed near Sydney in a train crash a few days ago, which has saddened us too!

Thank you, Osgood. I too am sorry for the astronauts who died and their families. It isn't just a loss for the U.S. The whole world benefits from the experiments done in space.

I heard the sonic boom this morning. It seemed to last a little longer than a normal sonic boom. I was at work and I first thought an old gas line had exploded. I didn't hear any sirens so I moved on to sonic booms and the jets at the air base nearby. I thought to myself that they wouldn't dare to let that happen over the city, it just can't be a jet. Then Marty came in about 9:30 and told me about the space shuttle. It is absolutely tragic.

Like you all, I have been at about half-speed all day. But I think about all the explorers who have lost their lives in explorations: Polar exploration, deep-sea, Africa, the early explorers discovering and mapping our world.

I think about people like my son who have everyday jobs putting their lives at risk: he sails the Bermuda basin ion hurricane season, or when he's ashore is a voluteer EMS and firefighter outside Portland ME.

or our other servants for humanity, the firefighters, doctors, heck almost anyone who volunteers to put their lives onthe line for our safety.

It is all too easy to say "well, they were adventurers, they knew what they were getting into."

Yes, they did. And they knew they were taking risks. It still is a tragedy and a tragic loss, if only because they were valiant humans doing a valiant job for a valiant purpose.

Church and prayer tomorrow take on new meaning.

Osgood, you all have lost quite a lot of people to those massive fires, lately, also, haven't you? Seems like everytime I turn on the news, lately, it is to hear of a major tragedy. The last two days, here, there has been a different murder/suicide in the news. The last one involved 3 children, as well. Makes you want to cry.

I believe that on this shuttle there was an experiment using Australian golden orb spiders to see if they could weave the same type of web in zero gravity.

Australian school children apparently were involved in this experiment!

Israel was also involved and the first Israeli astronaut was among those lost. I wonder how many other countries also had some connection with the flight?

My brother works for SPACEHAB, and has been deeply effected by this. His wife is answering the phone line NASA had set up to receive calls about debris locations. She says they are getting a lot of crack pots calling the line. One was a collect call from jail, the caller said he knew where some debris was but NASA had to get him out of jail before he would tell where it was.

It's sad to think that so many people will take advantage of other people during sad times.

My heart goes out to everyone who is effected by this sad event. :(

I did a quick search last night on ebay, and you would not believe the things that folks put up for bid just yesterday and the day before, all because of the accident. It's throughly disgusting. These are the kind of people who would rob the pencils from a blind man selling on the corner.

Ebay has a forum, also. Many people on there felt that ebay should have taken everything associated with Columbia off of bid as soon as the accident happened. Of course, they didn't. The things that are up there now, are patches, pictures, things like that, but they are still trying to make money off of someone else's tragedy.

Here is a post from eBay taken off their tribute forum to the victims of the shuttle disaster just a few minutes ago.

***Space Shuttle Columbia***

The eBay Community is deeply saddened by the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia. We send our sympathies to the families of the crew and to all those affected by this terrible tragedy.

The news media is reporting that shuttle debris is potentially dangerous. If you live in the affected areas and encounter what you believe is debris from the space shuttle, you are advised to keep your distance and contact the police immediately.

Of course, sale or listing of such debris is strictly prohibited.

Regards,
eBay

I ran a search of the STS-112 and "Columbia Disaster" on eBay and came up with 2 sites that had anything on it pertaining to the disaster. I suspect that eBay had enough feedback from its users that it shut down all auctions that had anything to do with this tragedy.

I am glad to see this.
