This guy walks in wanting to know how low I can go. Then he continues to tell me that this photographer who shot his daughters sporting event wants twenty dollars for an 8x10. The photos were actually Epsion inkjets. So, he went to Wal-Mart to blow up a 5x7 he had and the machine told him the print was copyrighted and it would not copy it. I burst out laughing at these smart machines. I am fascinated how this machine knows the inkjet is copyrighted?

I wonder if there is a very tiny copyright stamp that the scanner is able to recognize.

I said of course I could always scan it and print it for him. He asked how much? I replied that would have to be twenty bucks? :D

I think the guys name was Scott?

I referred him to Bob.

Hmmmm, first line of your post made me think the guy was a limbo stick salesman!

(Maybe not.)

I think photographers are in a tough spot these days.

People whine about the sitting fee. Then they take their proofs home, scan them and run off copies on the old inkjet.

The end results are not the same, but they don't care. Or if they DO care, they go back and complain to the photographer that the 8x10 copy they made from their 4x5 proof is pixelated!

A few years back I attended a seminar on developments in copyright law. One of the speakers said Kodak was considering technology that would be incorporated in their professional photopaper to counter photocopying. Description sounds very much like what Less described.

Less is always graphic in his descriptions, which is why I'm munching on a burger now and staying away from fire hydrants.

We all know that we, as framers, are constantly maligned for our prices. People just don't see why a couple pieces of board, glass and some wood costs so much. As a photographer, it's even worse! Because of the availability and low cost of most cameras everyone thinks they can do what a pro photographer can do at a fraction of the cost. They certainly don't take into account the thousands in equipment, or the years of training and experience. They also don't seem to consider that we are business people and need to make a living too. People that screw photographers should have their own special place in **** .

Never copy a copyrighted photo!

OK, I'm calm again and off my soapbox. Thanks for the vent!

I think most people DO know that, Frame Lady, but I don't think we should expect them to care.

Even the nicest customers are interested in their own needs and our ability to fulfill them. Would you hire someone because they needed a job? Or frame something for free because the customer needed it framed and couldn't afford it?

I'm not picking on you, and I don't think I'm nit-picking. We all fall in the trap. I sometimes imagine that, because I live fairly modestly, my customers should realize that my pricing is fair and I'm not over-charging them.

That's asking quite a lot.

I would agree that photographers, like the music industry, are facing tough "competition" from the digital toys we all have at home. The photographers don't deserve it.

It would be wonderful if photography customers, and framing customers, could recognize and appreciate quality. I have a couple of studio portraits in here to be framed and frankly, they are awful. The customer could afford any photographer she wanted, but she really can't tell the difference. She's thrilled with the photos. I could recommend any number of more competent local photographers, but she didn't ask and it's not my place to bring it up.

(If you're wondering who I'm talking about, Anne, drop me a note.)

Adobe PhotoShop has a copyright thing in it called Digimark. It embeds a generic mark, or for a fee, you can get a custom logoed mark to insert. It is not visible but my guess is that the "robot" print machines can see it. As a fne art photographer (and framer)I really appreciate the technology!!

So tired of getting ripped off
