Which is best for your computer?

What do all y'all do?

I used to shut everything down completely, but lately I have been using hibernate.

I see people on TV shows carting around laptops, opening the lid and they are ready to go - is that a real capability of a computer or is that a figment of television writer imaginations?

Even when it is hibernating, I still have to press the on button to wake it back up. I have never actually tried the sleep feature. What is the difference between sleeping and hibernating?

In the real world sleep would mean for a short time and hibernate would mean for a much longer time?

Do computers take naps? Is that what they do if you ignore the for a length of time and the screen goes black but when you move your mouse the screen comes back?

Seems like I should have learned this stuff years ago..... :help:

Close the lid without doing anything and when you open it back up it will wake up right where you left off. It just pauses it where you were and goes into standby waiting for the lid to be opened again. You do need to wait just a couple of seconds for your wireless to reconnect before being able to click a link while online.

Thats ok during the day, but should still do a full shutdown once in a while. This will free up any programs with memory holes to release the memory, and may install some important windows updates.

Yes tech support around our house usually goes like this:

Wife or Daughter : My computer doesn't work or is slow

Me : Try restarting it

Them: That worked

You would think after all of these years of me saying it one of them would try that first.

Every time I just close the lid, when I open it back up again I get the black screen which tells me that Windows did not shut down properly and it goes into the whole routine of starting from scratch and then Firefox tells me it is embarrassed and would I like to reopen my tabs? :faintthud:

Sounds like changes have been made in the power settings. Not sure what version you are using so if you go to settings and then find power/battery you can click restore defaults.

I restart my laptop about once a week, but every now and then the screen doesn't light up after being closed/sleep mode. The only way out is to do a hard shut down with the power button. The previous laptop did the same thing and I'm wondering whether it's a Win7 64bit problem?

Once every couple of weeks, while the laptop is working, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds, then comes back at full brightness (I normally have it at 10% brightness) and sometimes get a message about the display freaking out.
