So I am extremly conflicted. I just finished what I feel is the best designed and executioned frame I have ever done (i've been profesionally framing for 4 1/2 years) I want to show yall, because i'm proud of it, but I also think I would like to enter this into the grumble competion later this year. And as I recall one of the submission requirements was that we post jobs that had not been shown previously on the grumble. Also as a side not I would like to enter this in some other competions, does anyone know of any ongoing competions? it is for a customer, so it would have to be a competition like the grumble's where I can submit pictures.

Nah - keep it under your belt....

.................... SHOW US SHOW US................!!!

We'll all forget by July anyway, and I don't think it's a condition of The Grumble awards that it has not been shown here before - some of last year's had been.

You know you wanna, otherwise why dangle the carrot?

Just do it!

Enter a real competition!

Uncle Eli,

Enter one of the real (that is physical) framing competitions. The most likely candidate for this would be an Open PPFA Chapter or National competition. Get permission from the customer to do this on the local level for sure, where you retain ownership of the piece.

Looking at the PPFA Website, the closest PPFA Chapter to you, might be this one:

24 Tri-State Chapter
(Zips 15000-16999, 17700-17899,
25000-26899, 43900-43999, 44400-44599)

Tell the customer what you told us, they would be flattered. Then see if you can borrow it (you're responsible for it) and enter it in PPFA open competions or the like. Customer would even be happier having bragging rights if you won and it was shown in a publication.

Okay you twisted my arm

Here's the design!!
It's a signed Don Mattingly Jersey. The customer came in and I kinda drew a picture on a piece of paper to help him visualize the layout, but was just so excited about doing it, I said, "just trust me, you'll love it" He was a repeat customer, so he knew I wouldn't do him wrong. What do you think?

Nicely done, even if it is a Yankees jersey. What's the thing in the lower left corner, next to where it says Yankme's?

If you click on the link below the pic it will take you to slide show, and show you a close up. What it is is the Certificate of Authenticity. the way it's presented is the white suede mat is cut with a reverse bevel, and inlaid in the top blue mat. The stitching on the baseball is actually v-grooved into the mat, and then hand painted.

Great job Eli, but because of all the Yankees haters in the world (I'm a card-carrying member), it could prejudice the vote.

Go Orioles!

soooooooooo--
didn't you misspell it???? where's the "####" in the #### Yankees??????????

you doing good work old son!

Well done, Erik. Care to share your pinstripe technique? (please...and thank-you)

Great job, Erik! Beautifully done. I'm a longtime (40+ years) Yankee fan, and I'd be proud to own that and display it!

Coincidentally, I have a Yankee jersey to frame for a customer ....would you mind giving me a ballpark figure of what you charged for your job? My customer has a limited budget, and though I'd like to embellish the job as you did, I think I'll have to keep it pretty simple. The Wizard work you did is great! I'll have to practice more to achieve results like that. How'd you do the pinstripes? Is that a fabric wrap?

Great job ....

The details

The Frame I started with is Decor 9823. A 2in wide simple black frame with a 3/8 wide raised outter edge. I started by airbrushing the whole frame dark Yankee Blue, then masked off the stripes and the outter edge with "3M Artist tape for curves". 1/8 wide. The two vertical Legs were easy, I just ran the tape from top to bottom. When it came to the top and bottom rail, in order to get the stipes to match up I butted the two rails together and striped them as if it were one piece, then cut them apart so they could be painted individually. The corners were the most dificult, I placed the apropriate rails together to get the masking straigt for the transition. Once the masking was done I airbrushed the whole frame white (many coats of white to cover the Blue) Then removed the masking. I did have to go back in and hand paint the stripes over the corner, because the frame has a slight curve to it, and the lines looked a lil wavy across the mitre.

As far as the matting. I first sewed the Jersey to the suede back board, and then took a picture of it. I imorted the picture into Pathtrace and outlined the jersey. Once the Circut was complete I ofset it 1/2 in to give me the bottom mat opening. Then Offset it again 3/8 for the top mat. The baseball was created as it's own item and inlaid into the top mat, so there was no height difference. The Stiching is v-groved into the mat, and then hand painted. The Yankees Text was created in a similar fashion to the jersey opening. I got the logo to the size & shape I wanted in photoshop, then imported the image into pathtrace and created the cut art.

Because the rabbet on the frame I used was only 1/2 deep. I needed a subframe to accomodate the depth I had created with the framing package. I did this by using Decor 9533 Stacker. Now because it's a stacker, and the cap frame I was using isn't designed to accept it, i had to rip a steped rabbet into the frame (I did this pre-pinstripe) Since I don't have access to a table saw I set the depth of my Circular Saw, and used my ripping guide on the outter edge of the frame. It really is amazing what you can do with a Circular Saw.

The package was Glazed with a sheet of museum glass, and the overall finished size was 49 3/4 x 37.

I thought you said it was good?! Thats the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. I mean it's a Yankees jersey. Who would want that junk on their wall. Nice design and all but c'mon. Shouldn't you have framed an A's jersey or a Giants jersey instead? It would have turned out much better ;)
