shipping prices

I ordered 50' of length moulding in Texas from a big company...no names. The price was fair but the shipping (UPS) was an additional 50% of the frame cost. Is this customary with length moulding? Sure Maine is a long way but I receive shipments from CA that doesn't cost this much.

Another major expense that can be incurred due to shipping prices is 40 x 60 matboard. Occasionally, one of the companies that deliver to our door will not have the mat we need in an oversized board and I'll have to get it through another source. Wow! UPS doesn't want the responsibility of shipping that size and possibly being held responsible for damaging the shipment so now LJ has to use another privitized delivery service. $25 flat fee no matter how light the box is. LJ has researched the delivery charges of numerous services that will make these deliveries and $25 is the cheapest fee they have been able to come up with from the delivery companies. This is about an 80 mile trip from the Greensboro facility to Clayton.

LJ runs a delivery truck through our area, but my delivery time would be 4:00 AM! We do not have a place that a delivery could be left outside of our building that rain would not ruin our deliveries. My sales rep even suggested that I might leave a key (?) for the LJ driver so he could bring the delivery inside my shop. With our insurance company requiring a security alarm system, that isn't feasible either. So, when desperate enough, I pay the $25 fee.

How cheap do you want it to look??

Jean,

Check with that vendor on the UPS charges......if they were "asleep" or didn't bother to check with you, the cut size of this short length order may have zapped you.

UPS recently raised their surcharges on O/S shipments......if you hit either of their two ceilings, you might have absorbed those additional fees.

This is something I try to make my manager aware of all the time: If you're going to order a small amount of footage, querrie for the shipping charges to determine if you need to have this cut 5/5 or 6/4 or 7/3. Otherwise, wait for vendor paid deliveries where available!

Regards,

John

Hang on for higher prices for shipping. Many distributors are eating considerable "full surcharges" due to increased gasoline prices. These won't be going away soon now that Opec has announced another million barrels a day drop in shipments. Ultimately those surcharges will have to be passed on.
