I have a customer who wants me to build art storage crates. Not a big deal as I have to several for him when he lived here.

But this I my problem:

I'm in Pueblo, CO 81003 and he is in Eau Claire, Wi 54701.
  • The crate 46"x66"x7"
  • weight is approx 60 pounds.
  • Shipping by truck because of size

I need to know if it is better to use a trucking line (like Old Dominion or Yellow Freight) or Fed Ex freight?

What would the freight class be for a crate?

Anybody know what the NMFC and sub classification is for a crate?

I tried talking to UPS they said it would cost over $1000 in shipping.

Thanks for your help.

Try UShip.
If higher value piece, there are several companies who specialize in art moving. They have small vans with dedicated routes.

I have had excellent service from Fed X Freight. If you have an account with them you can get a substantial discount. (60% or more)
Also be advised of wording. The charges can vary a lot. Such wording as art, (replaceable or non replaceable makes a difference) wall décor, home furnishings, home décor, decorating accessory, to name a few. Calling it a one of a kind original priceless art, could become expensive or even non shippable.

I just helped some one ship something about the same size and weight, a Fletcher 3000, via FedEx freight and that cost about $150

Thanks everyone. I am finding out that the correct terminology does make a difference, especially when trying to define the class codes. So far, FED EX freight is coming in at the lowest price. Will check out the moving companies on Monday.

This job may not be worth all the trouble.

Is there a grumbler framer near Eau Claire, Wisconsin?

And does anyone of you know of a crating company near Eau Claire,Wisconsin that I might recommend to him?

Shipping an empty crate can be done with Greyhound Bus lines. Once there is art inside I would use a high quality carrier but to get the empty there it should be very cheap on Greyhound.

If you can make a frame you can make a crate, it's just 4 sticks of wood.
