Hi all, I'm new to framing and looking for advice on how best to flat mount a shikishi / illustration board to a backing mat so that the gold edges are visible. These boards are relatively durable at about 1/16" thick.
My current approach is using a backing mat with window cutout to attach hinges (kozo paper and wheat paste) on all four sides for rigidity. Does this seem viable?
Is a 1" overlap of the backing mat all right or should I go smaller? And is it ok to have tight hinges all around due to the board being heavier than paper? I assume the thicker material will be much less susceptible to buckling or puckering from humidity/temperature.

Would appreciate any suggestions or guidance!

Hi Willow, and welcome to the G.
What you have there is a variation on a Hedgehog mount, and a proven technique for float mounting.
There are a number of threads that discuss the technique if you are so inclined.

Hi, Willow. Welcome to the Grumble. I actually like your idea, as long as the piece is rigid enough. You may not need to come in as much as an inch all around. A half inch would support the piece closer to its perimeter and so might be more stable.

Thanks for the replies! I looked up hedgehog and sink mounting and look forward to experimenting with them in future projects.
Good to know my initial mounting approach is feasible. I'll give it a try with a 1/2" overlap, thanks for that suggestion!
