Sharpening
Simple tip, make sure that your sharpening service uses the hollow
grind method to sharpen chopper blades. No matter what they tell
you, chopper blades must be hollow ground. This means the blades
are sharpened with a round wheel so that the knife has a concave
angle with only the edge cutting the moulding. Flat ground blades
have no area for the cutaway, that makes the outside edge chip-out.
tip #2 lubricate chopper blades with any type of light oil. Every nite
before leaving , wipe your chopper blades down with a small amount
of lightweight oil, chopper blades oxidize (rust) overnight. They will
last so much longer between sharpening you will be amazed. If you
don't believe me do this simple test. Before you leave at night, put a
brand new mat blade in your mat cutter, but don't make any cuts.
First thing in the morning try cutting a mat with that blade. You will
find the blade to be very dull because over night it has in fact rusted.
chopper blades are no different.

What kind of lightweight oil?

This is very interesting. Gonna try it. Reminds me of one of Clark Howard's segments. A man called him and told him that he had been using the same cheap disposable razor for a year. He says that the reason the blades dull is not from the shaving, but from the moisture, which causes rust. He rinses and blow dries the razor after every use. Howard took his recommendation and has used his razor for about the same length of time.

Sorry....warped discussion here.....

Clark Howard's radio show drives me nuts! :icon9: I don't think this man has every walked into a custom frame shop in his life - if he did, I'll bet he got the quote and ran to the door!

I don't mind people being thrifty, but if more people went through life as he ascribes, wine would only be sold in boxes, everyone would be driving Chevy Geos, and custom frame shops would not exist. Life is too short Howard, please take your wife out to dinner on Valentines Day - and it's OK to spend more than $20. :D

John (I warned you that this posting belonged on Warped!)

Tewnty bucks on dinner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John did not know you ascribe to being such a highroller....too.

Some people (CH) just needs to try and get everyone else to do things their way so they do not feel so strange about themselves.

(Bring to mind any grumblers we know? "do not answer that")

Hey wine is fine in a box! At least if there is twelve bottles in the box.

:)

John you lead us a stray on this thread. I apoligize for going farther to the edge.

Thanks Chopper..
I too keep my tools oiled well all the time.
