I've been working in framing for a few years now, but I haven't done very many shadowboxes yet and I've come across a new problem.
I'm doing a pretty complicated military shadowbox that has various cards, photos, medals, foreign money and two large man's rings. I can handle everything but the rings. How the heck do I mount those?

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome!

To mount rings in a shadow box:

Cut a slit in the backing board a tad smaller than the ring. Push the ring thru the slit. Position the ring with the appropriate tilt. Stack some acid free mat board or foam board and push it thru the ring to make a pressure fit.

Or...
Stack and glue several pieces of foam board together. Cover with cloth or mat board paper. Cut a slit and push the ring into the stack. Mount the stack to your backing board.

Or...
find a dowel the size of the ring. Cut a short piece of dowel. Place ring on dowel. Attach dowel to backing board or make a small stand and attach the dowel to the stand and place the stand in front of the other shadow box items.

I'd prefer to show the whole thing, inside and out.

A couple of thin Melinex straps per ring would be practically invisible; totally invisible from normal viewing distance.

Thanks, Robo! I forgot the Melinex strap technique. Funny how I have used so many different ways. Guess it all depends on what's going into the frame.

Jim Miller has a great technique using a formed rod inside the ring. There may be a photo of it somewhere, but my quick search did not locate one. Jims book on shadowbox mounting is a must have, IMO.

I would use the melinex straps, however. I can mount things much quicker than using rods.

Have fun..... shadow boxes can be very rewarding.
