Would appreciate any design suggestions on framing a group of ice skating medals, photos, and ribbons. There are probably 30 medals total, 7 photos, etc. Have only done a few shadowboxes. Working on design options now. Customer would like several brass plaques denoting events, etc. Also would appreciate recommendation where to order brass plates. I am in the Washington, DC metro area. Thanks!

while you will find the Grumblers to be a very helpful bunch ,what you are asking for is extremly hard to do here.
First there probably as many designs as there are Framers. However to do a good job they must first see what is being framed and then how would they begin to explain what they wanted done.
In general i would place the pins that where given for the events pictured to gether in some form of a grouping with a Brass plate under them to denote what is being seen. You could also use some form of mat carveing to show an Ice skate or skater(depending on your skill or CMC )You also might try to use colors that are relavent to the Skaters organization/School or the Costumes in the Photos. But this is without seeing anything so it may all be totally irrelavent?

I agree with buddy. I cut openings for each medal in a top mat, with a different color matboard for the mount. Looks sharp. Try suede to really show them off. Looks good with the brass plates too, but a dab off extra glue may be needed to get proper adherence, or actually screwing them in, which is an option when you order that plate.

Thanks for the input. I realize that specific design ideas would be almost impossible. Was interested in generalities and any interesting different ways to display the medals. It sounds like I was on the right track.

I use fabric for the mat so I can match a liner to put around the inside of the frame. This is how I do 99.9% of my shadowboxes. Liners come in many different depths, and will give the piece a nice finished look around the edge. You will either have to use a deep enough frame to cover the liner completely, or stack the moulding.
For brass plaques, Village Brass, 800-235-8067, is an excellent company. They will pretty much do anything you ask, in any color you need, and ship it within a week. I have used them for years with absolutely no problems.

Mount the photos and mat with a suede mat. Use Fillets if the customer so desires. Better pick a deep moulding the suits the job as it will look when ready to mount in the frame. The photo mat will dictate the size of the shadow box. Using Framespace, fit a piece of clear glass into the size that fits over the mat board. Adhere the medals to the glass using the same glue used to fasten mirrors to a windshield. Float the medals above the photos. If you use clear Framespace you can paint the back to match the color of the suede mat board. Looks really sharp when you finish. Better check with your client before using any glue on the medals but if ok show them a sample. We keep a couple of float mounts in Framespace for show. Have sold a bunch of jobs this way. Cleaning the glass can be a major undertaking but with care and lots of canned air it can be done. I forgot to mention that you will need two pieces of glass and two frame space mounts; they will stack.
