I have a client that wants to mount 24 napkin rings with napkins inserted into box that will open from the front. Dimensions of the box would be approx. 32" x 12" x 4". Is a box of this type available commercially or am I going to have to build it. I would like to have some suggestions as to the availability in California. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Jack we often make shadowboxes with doors. I often use an extender moulding from Presto. You are limited in color-black only. We have biscuit joined it back to back for really deep projects.

We've built shadow boxes out of popular, then build the front from a regular frame moulding, and piano hinged it to the popular down one side. If you then put a magnet catch in it, it stays closed, but is still real easy to open. Finish the popular to match the frame moulding you use on the front, and, of course, sand and sand until it is smooth as glass prior to finishing. Line the whole thing with fabric. It looks great when done right.

Susan ;)

PS. If the rings are silver, use "silver cloth" to line it. It keeps them from tarnishing.

You can make an acrylic box frame that opens instantly, while the frame stays on the wall. No tools, no hinges, latches, or other hardware of any kind.

Have a box made of 1/4" acrylic. Choose two frames with at least 1" depth (that's important). Make one of them to fit inside the box, and the other to fit outside the box. Trim carefully, so that there is less than 1/16" clearance inside and out. Both frames will be attached to a sturdy backing board.

The acrylic box's edges fit in the groove between the inner and outer frames. I call it "Gravity Groove", because gravity is what holds the box in place. It actually rests on the top of the inner frame, so the fit along the top edge must be snug.

Where the edges of the acrylic box touch the backing board at the bottom of the groove all around, drill small holes to let air into the box when the acrylic cover is lifted off.

Lois at Superior can send you the box built to your dimensions.

Thanks Jim,
We would be happy to send the frame at whatever dimensions you require. Just let us make the acrylic first if possible. This one must have a very accurate fit to look great and work well.

Jim or Lois, your acrylic shadow box sounds so great... I just get completely lost in the directions! What can I say, I'm visual. Can either of you post a few pictures of what you are talking about, say front and side views. I'd love to have some samples in my store of something like this. What is the approx. cost beyond the moulding costs for something like this?

Acrylic was my first impulse but the client said "absolutely not, hate the stuff", I explained the benefits to her but she is not willing to consider it.

I will probably use a deep, raw, bass moulding from Fosters and finish the door with a deep finished moulding.

Thanks for the info.
