I'm wondering what the best adhesive would be to secure coins on a mylar overlay... this is a fun piece for a customer with old "art" under the mylar....

I'm thinking my super duper gel glue - but would that ever be able to be removed once the coins might return to circulation.

Or Heavy Duty Fillet tape? which is what I use for engraved brass title plates...

eeny meeny miney mo...

Thanks,

Do not rely on any tape to hold a coin on clear polyester film. It will not stick for very long under constant stess.

If the coins are not collectible, I suggest -- if you can believe it -- silicone. Better yet, Gorilla Glue. Note that chemical offgassing is also an issue...is the art worth preserving?

Jim, the art is not in need of preserving. How much offgassing occurs and what are the effects?

Thanks,

Maybe "roughing up" the surface where the coin will adhere to the Mylar with a piece of coarse sandpaper would help to give "tooth" to the adhesive as well...?

How much offgassing? Maybe not much, but maybe enough to ruin the art image. The layer of clear film and an air gap would be between the coins/adhesive and the art image, right? That would provide some protection, but it could not be considered an adequate barrier for any preservation purpose. You could also have offgassing in the form of fogging the inside of the glazing.

If in doubt, find another way.

Yes, Lance, that certainly would increase adhesion to the clear film. But one small scratch on the area where a coin isn't would ruin the sheet.

hey guys! be very aware that GG sets up foamy & is very sticky/runny/MESSY(gets on everything!) and that UV seems to break it down/rendering it worse than useless. I'd vote for silicone

I thought I'd be waiting forever for this! ;)

(Sorry....I had to
)

There are solid epoxy resins, that could be considered for non-preservation applications.
A gray one, called something like P7 is very adhesive and should work with Mylar, especially
if the area to which it is to be applied is
given a number of puncture holes. Please remember,
this is not a preservation method.
