Seal press problem

I have a 25 year old Masterpiece 500T with a solid-state thermostat that I installed many many years ago after the original thermostat went nuts and melted the wax off of a diploma. Ouch.

I rarely use it any more, and always at a really low temperature and a short dwell time (maybe an hour every other month at the outside) - last time I used it - it was fine. Today I turned it on, temperature set to 160 degrees, and it took over a half an hour to struggle up to what the thermostat claimed was 125. I gave my one dry mounting job a go anyways, was successful, although the thermostat plunged even lower during the time the press was closed.

Just for S&G I turned it up to 170 and it struggled back up to 125-130.

I know I have test strips around somewhere here, but this is my question: is it possible that the solid state thermostat has blown a gasket and needs replacing? Is Seal even an entity anymore? Where can I buy a new thermostat?

I suppose if I had to I could work around not having a press anymore but it seems to me that would be a PITA - I use it for flattening as much as for mounting.

I had a similar problem with my 500T-X last month. And found a very helpful place called On Site, from Salt Lake City. They have the parts you need, but you will need a part number. If you don't have the number they can tell you how to get it.

Good Luck

Thanks, Clive and Bob - I am going to have to do some more testing with temperature strips and different temperature settings to see if I can pinpoint what is going on.

Gosh - I do so very little mounting nowadays - everything is hinged or put in pockets or encapsulated. When I first started we would turn on the press right after we turned on the lights - and the beast was on all day every day. That sounds unimaginable now, eh?
