I've been having problems with hanger screws spinning out, more and more.
Get supplies from different sources.
Is it that the threads are not deep enough or mouldings are just getting softer and softer?
Any one elsehaving problems?

I usually try use the longest crew that the moulding will accomodate.

I use the #6 sheet metal screws from 888 Manufacturing and have had no problems. I use an electric screw driver and am careful not to over tighten them especially on the softer woods.

I prefer the screws from http://hangmanproducts.com/ I think they are a 6 by 1/2. The thread is good and the top part where the bit slides in is always solid - no slippy drilling. If you order them, call and ask for the wholesale bulk price. They are 3 cents a piece, but I always feel like they will stay in and not cause any grief down the road.

I also use screws from McFeely's. I use 3 different screws, depending on the frame. Like Jeff, I set the clutch on my 12V driver appropriate to prevent spinout.

For narrow frames I use their #0 Square Drive 4x1/2" screw. http://www.mcfeelys.com/4-x-1-2-woo...eel-pan-head-square-drive-qty-1000-9mw41.html A little over 3 cents per screw bought by the thousand.

For medium frames and for turn buttons I use their #2 Combo Drive 6x1/2" scews. http://www.mcfeelys.com/6-x-1-2-woo...ed-truss-head-combo-drive-qty-1000-9ltg2.html A little over 2 cents per screw bought by the thousand.

For large frames I use I use their #2 Combo Drive 6x5/8" screws. http://www.mcfeelys.com/6-x-5-8-woo...el-truss-head-combo-drive-qty-1000-8zn60.html A little under 2 cents per screw bought by the thousand.

Ditto Jeff. You might be over-tightening.

Ditto, Ditto. The clutch on your drill is your friend. I've found that 18V and higher drills have too much torque. A 12V or 9.6V drill with a clutch works much better.

I've got three of these puppies in my shop. One with a #2 Square drive bit, one with a #1 square drive bit and one with a 5/64" drill bit for pre-drilling screw holes. These were cheap enough (about $30 each when I bought them) that I can leave the bits I use most often in them permanently.

It's one of only 2 12V drill drivers I've found (the other being Milwaukee) that has a 1/4" hex locking tool-less collet. The 12V Lithion-Ion batteries last weeks between charges.

Buy United States made screw, wire, & hangers and you will solve 90% of the problem and you will also support your customers who may work in the industries that make those components. I don't purchase any foreign made hardware and since I moved over to all US made products whenever possible, I have not had a problem. Since I stopped purchasing the "CHEAP OUT" components my screws are not spinning out (unless I put to much torque on them), my wire is not breaking, and the hangers don't bend into weird shapes. Do yourself and your customers a favor and give them a better component - it will only cost you a few pennies more per frame but may save you a ton of money in the long run. Just my opinion Joe B
