I buy my glaas from a local framing supplies wholesaler, who cuts it to 3 ft x 2 ft and it appears to be this cutting and moving that is causing blemishes, minor scratches and "rubs" on the glass and I have to bin it.
I am looking to buy in bulk from a new supplier who supplies paper interleaved sheets, but will only supply crates of 400 sheets.
( apologies for the long intro ) but are there any good hints out there for checking glass prior to putting into the frame ( I hold it up to fluorescent light- but that doesn't always show all the blemishes ) and what cleaning cloths/wipes do framers prefer ?
I use a low lint wipe, but they are not cheap.

Ken, as for where to get paper-packed glass in England, I can't help you. (Hopefully someone closer can help.)

As for the glass cleaning, we have had a lot of debate about that. Check the Archives. You will find plenty of suggestions from type of wipe to use, all the way to how to mix your own glass cleaner.

...And third... Welcome to the Grumble! :D

Hi Ken,
Have you tried Wessex Pictures, they have a branch in Bournemouth that should be able to supply you with smaller amounts. 01202 433070

Hi Ken.
We are down in Cornwall and get our glass from a local supplier. We DO INSIST on paperleaved 3ft x 2ft glass, and (touching wood) we have no problem.
If you are having problems with bleamishes on glass that is not paperleaved then contact your supplier and insist on replacement sheets. We did that to our previous suppliers.. They caught on quite quickly that they might just lose trade. As it happens they did, only because we got a better quality glass and cheaper..
Agree with the previous reply.. Wessex pictures supply to the Portsmouth/Southsea area, that I do know.
As for cleaning the glass, and just maybe I had better put on my flack jacket now from other grumblers. but we use, lint free cloths and standard Tesco glass cleaner. No problems with smears or it leaving any residue..
cheers

As for cleaning glass we have not purchased manufactured cleaner in years.
We use a mixture of white vineger (cider), alcohol and a dash of dish washing liquid. the concentrate is mixed 1:32 with ionixed water (filtered) to reduce static charges. Grandma would be proud.

Get some baby’s nappies (dippers) the non disposable cotton type are best, wash them a few times without washing powder, get two baskets, put the clean nappies in one and the dirty ones in the other, every so often wash the dirty ones using water only.

A by-product of this method is that you may be able to write a washing machine off as a business expense!!!

BTW cotton T-Shirts (Vests) work just as well as nappies.

Ask the guy’s that supply your glass to put a sheet of old news paper between each cut sheet, you are correct about the scratches when the glass is cut it shreds little bits which if not cleaned off will scratch the glass.

Lion have the Ebor glass cleaner Product No. 548 page 78 Cat No. 39 this is a great cleaner, Ebor manufacturer it in Europe to the CRL formula………..this is the glass cleaner which is used by the guy’s who make double glaze units………….it’s a super product.

Jerome’s glass cleaner also works very well, he told me about it last year when he came to visit, ……………….when I run out of my Ebor cleaner I will be using Jerry’s cleaner as it is to expensive to ship the Ebor product from the UK, it is in a pressure can and needs special shipping, it is no longer available from any Irish suppliers.
