We've recently made a new rule at our shop; that all certificates get scanned before we frame them, and the digital copy gets emailed to the client.

This has a twofold 'win' to it. 1. the customers are usually delighted with the idea, as they have usually not thought that they might want to include a digital copy of their qualification with job applications. and 2. We no longer have people coming back after a couple of months and ask us to take the frame apart so they can make a duplicate of the certificate (it's so hard to keep smiling when they ask you to do that!)

Reason #3 = Easy way to collect their email as they see a benefit of giving it to you. :D

Just be aware, John, that it is illegal to add them to your broadcast email list without getting their permission to do so. It is considered spam if you do so. I always ask a customer if it would be OK to add them to our email list for occassional emails about events and new artists that we represent and assure them that their email is never given or sold to any other entity. I also tell them that they can easily opt out of our list "if you don't like what I send you...:o". We use Constant Contact for our list management.

Good idea! But don't you think you may have another oppotunity to sell another frame to the customer when he or she asked you to take the frame apart? I think it is good for customer to return whether to buy or to take apart.

Just had a Brain f***. With all the legal copywrite issues today. Is it legal to copy of certificate? Or a diploma??

Just wondering

We do this for all of our military certificates and diplomas, and anything else that might need to be used again. We usually frame the copy and give the original back to the customer since most will need it at a later time. As far as the military goes, most people keep an "I Love Me" book with all the original orders and awards.

Good point :P I believe it is illegal actually! I suppose *really* they ought to ask the learning institution for a copy.

A basic photo copy for their records should be perfectly legal. Plain paper on a desktop laser printer should do the trick.
