I am now sitting on 5 RUSH orders that HAVE TO BE DONE BY FRIDAY (8/25).

We do have an extra charge for rush(about $5)
We are considering adding a 10% surcharge if not picked up when requested.
This is our busiest time and it is not easy to squeeze in rush orders and then to have them sitting around when I have 50 to 60 orders.

Right now I do not have much room.
Would you ad a surcharge which will be written as a store policy on the invoice
or would you just charge more for a rush??

I have 2 rush projects - due Tomorrow. I don't usually charge extra - but if I were as busy as you sound - I think I would charge more than $5!!

Good luck,

Roz

The only problem with not charging a rush charge is that quite often customers will expect things to always be turned around that quickly.

I generally will charge a shipping charge if I have to order separate from my normal order flow, but, for a great customer, I'll wave a usual rush charge.

If you do charge a rush charge, I would bury it in the price because no one wants to pay a rush charge. The only industry I know it is quite common in is in the advertising/photo/commercial art field and is considered normal for ultra quick turnaround demand. Otherwise it would leave a sour taste in a customers mouth when actually you are going above and beyond the call of duty.

I will only accept a rush order if there is room for it in the schedule. We do not charge a special fee.

We have a sign in our window offering 1 day service. There is fine print at the bottom of the sign "based on availability". In your case it appears that you have filled your dance card to overfilling. Due 8-25 and today is 8-28.

They were done and the customers were called on 8-24 and they are still sitting here.
Since I am here from 9am to 9pm this time of year I almost always get the rushes done.

We are in a tourist location and for the most part everything goes well until the DREADED AUGUST people get here. The DREADED AUGUST people are known on our island to be rude demanding and just down right nasty. But every year we manage to get through.
Just somtimes you kinda feel like they expect everyone to jump when they snap their fingers. We try our very best to try to please them. We are getting used to the fact that we only have to deal with them for a month (31 days-744 hours-44640 minutes) the rest of the world has them for the rest of the year.
Sorry; it's that time of the season when we have to vent.

As far as charging extra we will probably put a

next to their name in our POS and bump them 20%
Thanks for listening

ok Doug,

Now I know what you are griping about.

I agree......... They should be charged a surcharge for non-pickup of a rush order. Place the charges on your wall with your other policies.

Maybe we should put a lease agreement in with Rush orders or anything else that sits for more than 10 days after notifing that it is ready.

We always have rush orders paid in advance, then when they don't get picked up when requested it really doesn't matter. Other then the time spent getting it ready.

Wow, Frank Gregory, what a cool web site you have! Very nice art work too. The painting Fair Parking, Ice Fishing and your father stirring spaghetti caught my eye.

Is that your shop with the ivy covering the side?

I second that assessment. That's quite a nice place you have there, and the website is a nice showcase for your many talents. Looks like you enjoy what you are doing very much. Hope it's lucrative too.

Hey thanks Jo and Rick. The websites kinda old and stale at this point, although it's still new to whoever wanders in. I rent about a third of the building on two floors. There's been a mill on this site since the eighteenth century, first a flour mill and later this building where they produced steel stamps. Its a bit rundown and a little hard to find, but Ive got the Green River out my window and watch flocks of Mergansers, Great Blue Herons and kingfishers when business is slow. I rented this space to paint the murals for the Great Falls Discovery Center. When that was finished I kind of drifted back into framing and here I am. If you want to see more recent work I have a couple of blogs The Studio Wall and The Art Department. I say they're recent, but I haven't updated them since I finished a big project this past spring.... look for up dates soon though. While you're at it check out my frameshop site Green River Frameworks. I mentioned in another thread that I may lose this space before the end of the year. I still don't know what I am going to do about it.

Grumblers will be missing something special if they don't check out the links Frank posted.

Thanks for sharing with us, Frank. Love your blog.

Frank, it must be really fun to be in your head!

Nice work!

Rush orders:

1) Paid in full at time of order
2) Labor charge doubled (and our charges are around $60 per hour)
3) No signage. We discuss the charges at the time the "rush" is initiated. Funny how "rush" things might turn into regular orders

Using the above as criteria, we have a one- or two-day turnaround. Then I don't care if they EVER pick them up 'cause I've got all my money and some good profit to boot
