Ok, I am stumped. I am framing 3 military medals, now Once I get them mounted through the slot I will be mounting them with Melinex-516. But here is the problem. The ribbons are apart. Basically what I am trying to say is that there is no longer a way for the medals to rest as there is no longer one continuous loop. So my question is. What would be the best way to re-attach the ribbon to the other side. Thanks for the help!

unfortunately that would be too easy. No, it is just apart. One long (well medium) length of ribbon. I can loop it through the medal. But once it has been pulled through it may come off or slide off. I hope I am being clear. I am confused myself.

Justin, what about looping the ribbon through the medal, then cut a slot in the matboard (the width of the ribbon and the height determined by how much of the ribbon you want to show). Then feed the ends of the ribbon through the slot and secure them at the back of the matboard. You could secure them by sewing the two ends together to form a loop, run a strip of Melinex through the loop, and then secure the Melinex with 3M #889 tape. From what you are saying I think the medals aren't already mounted on some kind of pin/metal clasp; you just have the medal and the strip of ribbon...???

A picture is worth a thousand words ... can you post a photo of the medals / ribbons? If so we can probably better help you!

Justin, your dilemma still isn't crystal clear, so I like Andrew's suggestion of a photo.

How about wrapping the ribbon in Stabiltex, Crepeline, or even tulle, and passing the ends of the fabric through one full-length, vertical slot in the mount board, under the ribbon? Attach the wrap-fabric to the back of the mat by glue or tape.

Sounds like you have a "presentation" medal.. the way some, like a Congressional Medal of Honor, are given out... same as an Olympic medal... ribbon goes over head and hangs on chest..

Everyone is slightly confused because we usually only see the "Pin the tail on the donkey" ribbons and medals....

Do it the way Karen is suggesting, but make sure you get the "V" of the ribbon / neck line, or it looks like you just RFed the Pin Medal.

Don't worry about the CMH, you won't see many of them in Canada.... but it is the same for the Queen's Honor Medal or what ever it's called for RCMPs.

ok, I apologize for the confusion I have caused. Here is a picture of the medals. They are all loose with the ribbons but i removed one to show you what I meant. Thanks!

Thanks for the photo. I would loop the ribbons through the medal and then I would sew the medal to the mat board. I would then just stitch through the under side of the of the ribbon in two or more places to support just the ribbon.

Mik beat me to it. Sew the bezel on my great cousin george and the lower bar on the other two. this will keep them from swinging about.. which more than can be said of george.

I think I would still use the Melinex to attach the medal portion to the matboard. From my experience, anyway, it seems to be more secure (i.e. doesn't shift) when I use the Melinex rather than if I sewed it.

As for the ribbon, Mik's suggestion is fine, or you could sew through the ribbon at the back where they meet (i.e. where it looked as though they were glued before). Then run a thin strip of Melinex at the top through the resulting loop (i.e. cut two slots in the matboard on either side of the ribbon at the top of the loop). In my previous post, I was thinking that the ribbon might have frayed ends that you wouldn't want to show, thus my suggestion for cutting a slot in the matboard and threading the ribbon ends through and securing at the back of the matboard.

Hope this makes a bit of sense. I find I'm better showing how to do something rather than writing.

p.s. Just got my "for members only" from the PPFA in the mail today and saw your family's frameshop - it looks terrific
