A while ago I tried to post some pictures and a description of how I have used ribbon to wrap the edge of a canvas. Here is a better description I hope

1 Tools and materials needed

Ribbon%20Edge%20001%20cropped.jpg

Stapler, scissors, Mat board strips 1/2" wide, 1.5" wide ribbon, and the canvas

2 Beginning Detail

It is important to leave some ribbon hanging out at the beginning. This will be folded over to create a finished edge later

3 Applying the ribbon and mat edging around the frame

4 More details of the application

5 The start / stop junction

Note that the tab of ribbon that was left out at the beginning is folded back on itself

6 Pull over the corners

This can be a little tight

7 Stretch the ribbon over the matboard and staple to the back

(sorry the picture is a little blurry)

8 When you come to the beginning end staple the bottom ribbon down first

Continued:

9. Staple the folded tab of ribbon left from step 2 over and down to give a nice clean look

10. Finished look detail

11. Ribbon finished edge with a floating frame sample (Fotiou 1 3/4" U4000BL)

12. The artwork was painted by my daughter Railey (13 years old) at art classes she attended.

I hope this is not to long winded (or pictured). I had another chance to take some observations again. Many people asked about how I did it before so hopefully this helps clear up the description.

That is so neat, James and doesn't seem like a PITA to work with. Thanks for sharing, and tell your daughter she did a great job on the Tigers. War Eagle from an Auburn fan!

I am so glad you posted pics of this.. I remember you talking about it awhile ago.

Nice alternative.

Yes, your daughter is talented! I love her use of color in her painting.

Eric, I used flawboard, and a roll of ribbon that cost ~$2.50 and some staples. The biggest cost would be your time. For a larger canvas (this one was 20 x 30) once the flawboard was cut it took me about 15 - 20 minutes. With practice you could probably do it in 10. So (shop charge x 0.4hrs?.

Of course it could be considered a premium service and the customer doesn't need to know how simple it is. On my invoices I have a line that says labour. I fill in the blank!
