I have an older IMAC G5, pre Intel, and I reset the SMU, no problem.
I wanted to try to reset the PRAM because the sleep function hasn't worked for a while so I just have not used it.
I thought that the reset might help but I don't want to lose settings and preferences in the process.
To reset the PRAM I am supposed to hold down Command-Function-PR.
Any MAC users have any info? :help:

Here ya go.

But I don't think this is the cause of your sleeping problem. A Mac can get troubles with sleeping by a few causes. Most of it the Mac has troubles to wake up again. What happened exactly Neil?

About a year ago the sleep function went bad. It would go to sleep and not wake up unless I pressed the start button on the back and it would go through the start up all over again.
It used to wake up if you touched the mouse or any key.
I turned off the sleep function so either the computer is on or off and it works fine that way.
I reset the SMU which controls the fan and some other functions but that didn't fix it.
I was going to try to reset the PRAM but I don't want to lose settings and make things worse.

Reseting the pram (restart+) is no problem and will not give ay problem. But I think you will have to clean your Mac G5 from clutter to get your system as close as possible to the original. We have 2 G5's iMac in our workings and none has problems with sleep or awaking. That was more a problem for the G4-range with earlier OSX.
First thing to do is to clean all caches of Safari with +E and go to the pref's of Safari and kick out all cookies and other stuff. Only let the cookie of this Grumble remain and some of your harmless favorites.
Do those actions every week. If you never did this before you will be surprised to see that this time it will take over 5 min before all caches are deleted..... The same with those ugly cookies...... Find info here
Than (still in Safari) just clear your history. You will learn that your Mac will be much faster when you have stored your favorites as it has to be with using no (or just a few days) history.

Than make a search here to find the Safari-cookies plugin to handle that ugly cookies automatically.

Be sure to close all your programs really with +Q and not just clicking away (-W) the windows.
Neil. To help you please post me a list of all programs you have in your program-folder.
The second thing you have to do is to really trash all aliases from Appleworks. Go to:
- finder
- (Neil)
- documents
- Appleworks user-data/files
-Starting
and empty all three folders.

If those folders contain a lot of aliases from files that you have deleted or removed from your Mac, your system gets confused by searching the original files and more and more it will load your system with troubles. Empty those every month.

Finally, when you can and get no printer-driver problems, just upgrade to OSX 10.5.8 to run a higher and better version of Safari to install some extensions as I noted in a topic in this Grumble-section.

Find that here.

It will be a health for your G5.

I have my G4 Cube 1.2 GHz also running at 10.5.8 and it works fantastic. Your graphics are much better as in my Cube.......

Have to make an edit net for my previous posting. Empty cashes in Safari can through your menu or with +alt+E

Beside all this it's hard for me to have a look into your Mac. But I hope you have stored all files and programs correctly in the presented folders. I saw some people before with files (35 GB) in the program-folder.
An other issue can happen with Norton. Never install anything from this ugly dragon on your Mac. It is totally not reliable and does more bad as good.

Just remember me..... You can also get troubles when you still use your original HD inside with less than 15% free space. Your iMac G5 can become 8 years old now and the cheapest had a HD of 40 GB only.

The final thing that can cause problems with sleeping is a wrong adjusting of the energy-setting in the prefs. Be sure to adjust the screen sleeping time shorter as the system-sleeping time. When you switch that settings, it can give troubles with sleeping with some models.
