Well how do you like that, we actually screwed up. That NEVER happens...

One of my framers stacked two small varnished paintings with matboard in between. Naturally, the mat stuck to the less than cured varnish in a couple of small spots. The varnish is Windsor-Newton Acrylic Gloss Varnish. I've worked with oil based varnishes before, but not acrylic. Any suggestions for removing this varnish?

Fortunately the customer is the calm type, and it is their own painting, so there is not much tension at this point.

I use Daler-Rowney Acrylic Gloss Varnish and it is soluble with mineral spirits or pure turpentine.
You could ask your artist to check the varnish container for you.

Is it the water based or solvent based varnish? You might want to try contacting WN through their website. www.winsornewton.com

Thanks folks - Windsor has the correct solvent, and the problem is now solved.
