Brief background: When I bought my shop there was nobody available to explain things in the shop. Previous owner had passed away. So in the 15 months I've owned the shop I've come across things I don't know what they are or used for. Thus the following question:

The vacu-press has two release boards, so that's what I've been using. I just read in Chris Paschke's book I should be using release paper on the bottom, not release board. With the shop I found a large roll of what appears to be "Freezer" paper. White, glossy on both sides, about 36" wide. Could this be release paper? How can I be sure before sticking it in my press?

Thanks,

You could test it with the tacking iron. Just use a piece of scrap paper instead of a customer's artwork. If the freezer paper stuff is release paper, you should be able to tack the scrap paper in place without getting any adhesive on the tacking iron. Of course, if it isn't release paper, your tacking iron will be a gooey mess.

Sp to prevent that gooey mess that Paul refers to, put your suspected release paper between two sheets of kraft and see what happens after it cools. Does one side or the other stick to the kraft. If neither side sticks then there you go, release paper.

In my vacuum seal press I was using a release board on top and bottom, (I too had inherited knowledge from previous user and that's what he did) with release paper between art and top release board. I just talked to Sherri in tech support at Elmer the other day and she said not to use a release board on bottom because it can interfere with the pressure and can result in not good adhesion and or bubbles. Anyone agree?

I use a release board on the top and bottom. I would think that method would actually balance out the pressure. It also prevents any adhesive from getting to the bladder.

I bought my press used and it still has adhesive on it from the prior owner. I guess they didn't use a bottom release board or paper.

Maybe I'm wrong. But that is the way I do it.
