As the first phase of the remodel of the shop, we are redoing our corner sample display. What we are doing is to hang 30" hollow core doors on the wall with Z-bar. Each door is spaced about 4" apart and has 3 rows of Velcro, there will be a total of 18 doors.

My question is in how to group the mouldings. I currently have 5 groups. 3 of these groups are price based (Basic, Select & Choice) then there are the in-stocks & those that are not in-stock but don't fit into one of the 3 price groups.

In hanging the walls, I am wondering if I should just mix all these groups together and hang them by finish (Gold, Silver, Wood tone, Black etc)

If you remember some of my other posts, most of our sales are package priced framing. The ends of the corner samples are painted to correspond to the above categories. The trouble with this is often people will only look at the cheapest board. I still make good money doing this, but I think I could be leaving money on the table.

Thoughts????

Dave... I generally do not like grouping mouldings by color but prefer to group mouldings by families with contrasting families next to each other. It is much more interesting.

Having all your value priced mouldings in one area does make sense on the surface, but I would still intermingle them with the others since you can see the ends and anyone who wants to go to them could easily do that. I too would think that if they are all together you will have a good number of customers just go to that group. Your sales and the best designs would suffer, IMO. Hanging the "in-stocks" together could make sense though.

Put the cheaper moulding on a dented dinged up scabby looking door. Then when they ask for the package priced moulding you can point to that door.

The closed corner frames can be hung on a big oak door with stained glass side lights :)

I do mine by color....... cant handle everything being all wack~a~doodle and mixed in together! :popc:

One thing to remember, Package priced, does not mean Value board. I have package priced mouldings that are $15 a foot.

The doors are painted in a dark almost black espresso. This means that most of the samples look great against it, but the black and dark mouldings seem to disappear. The new track lighting is down the road so I won't know if that will make them pop back to life.

Organize all you value frames on the one door in color grouping forgetting which value section it falls into. This way maybe you will sell a better looking gold at a higher price in the lineup. Just my two cents.

Bates, there are over 1200 mouldings that fit with in the package pricing. Again, package pricing is not "Value" pricing.

I know that it is hard for framers to wrap their head around, but the customers love being able to know what they are spending without having to price out each design combination.

Put your most profitable frames closest to hand at your most used design counter and go from there.
