Looking for a quality "Regular Glass" any suggestions? Thier is alot of choices and I wonder if one is better than the other or if I should just go cheap?

My default glass is Conservative Clear. It has UV Protection. I am asked for "regular glass" and when I use it I order it from my regular supplier.

It is not glass from a Glass place. I get it in a box and each lite is seperated by paper. As picture glass it is more expensive than window glass, and has less flaws and bubbles and specs.

If yo ugo cheap it'll cost you more as you throw away a lot of flawed glass and waste your time.

  • If you want cheap, buy glass by the pallet, or half pallet
  • You will spend more time cleaning pallet glass
  • If you buy a pallet be sure that the delivery truck can put it where you want it!
  • If you want less expensive than UV filtering and only need a small quantity buy Premium Clear by the box
  • Next step up is Conservation Clear, which along with many others is my 'regular' glass

I don't sell much regular glass... I've used both generic and branded.

I've found (when I ran out...like I say, I don't stock much regular) that the local hardware store's grade of regular glass was better or equal to some I've been buying from framing suppliers.

You almost have to look at one vendor at a time to answer your questions.

Overall... I haven't seen a lot of differences.

Ask for samples. Start with the cheapest one that matches what you expect and see if you're happy with it.

Remember though...crated glass is usually not cleaned (just washed) ...where boxed glass is usually completely clean with paper packing. Saving $.25 a sheet isn't worth your elbow grease.

Janet, and all others,

My major supplier of glazing products(Circle Glass http://www.circleglassco.com/) services both the frame shops and hardware shops in SE Michigan for well over 30 years. It is all the same prewashed from the same stack in his warehouse (2.2mm SSB grade). His source is Guardian Glass and Tru Vue for glass.

We are selling more & more regular glass these days. I have been getting 2mm paper packed glass for $22 a box. Is that cheap enough for ya?

Regular Glass at $22 a box? That is cheap. What brand is it? its not made in China is it?

2 mil is typicaly a generic, I think quality is pretty much the same across the board. The day the sell perfect, defect free, cuts itself glass I am in.

If it is not made in China, then it is Eastern Europe or Indonesia most likely, regular 2mm or 2.2mm glass is not made in the US these days.

Make sure it is paper interleaved (not powder) and you should be OK regardless of where it is made.

Too many defects and inclusions in regular glass for me. I only use it on sizes 11x14 and smaller and because I don't care so much if it's defective and I lose a lite. I use TruVue premium clear for all my other sizes. Far fewer defects.

My generic glass comes in almost perfect every sheet. The only defects I find are in the coated glass. 2 non-glare scratched coatings today. I hate that laminated carp we have to use. The generic I get is Guardian and pay about what Bill pays.

I pay $32 a box delivered. 95% of my customers want "plain" glass. I show them conservation clear and museum, but seldom does anyone take it.

I can see this thread slowly turning back to the debate of "do you only sell conservation glass in your shop"?

But I won't go there :)

I've gotten 2.0 cheap glass off the Larson truck, and Valley Moulding is always pedaling their "Washed Glass" fairly cheap. But I don't deal with that stuff nearly enough.

This is why we have eliminated NG glass from our inventory. We sent it all back when TV changed it and we notified them. When we need NG, we sell NG acrylic, which seems to have a more fine etch than that awful coating on TV glass. That's also why we sell MG.

Regular Glass

Thanks for everyones advice! I get conservation jobs as well however still sell majority of projects in regular clear glass. My distributor has changed to Artist Choice.

:icon11:

Glass is not really coming from China is it? I mean seriously if it where it would be more expensive and have more defects other than a bubble, seams like it would be chipped all to heck.

The majority of 2mm and 2.2mm float glass is produced in China this day, it is not cost effective for other factories around the world to run that weight glass on there production lines they concentrate on the more expensive architectural glass products.

Don’t kid yourself about the quality of goods out of China these day, those guys know how to make products to world class quality and even in some cases better, and they can beat the pants of any other area of the world on pricing, sure there is still some rubbish coming out of China glass is not one of those products, they have the newest furnaces in the world, the quality of glass can greatly depend on the age of the furnaces, the US and the UK have some of the oldest glass furnaces that are sill in use.

Saudi Arabia is also becoming a player in the float glass market.

43% if not more by now of the worlds flat glass is produced in China. http://www.salusbury.info/uploads/gasworld-Mar-08.pdf
