So a customer just brought in multiple acrylic boxes w/ butterflies. some adhered directly to the bottom of the case (those were unsalvageable) and others mounted on acrylic rods. we are condensing multiple boxes into one smaller shadow box. I'm linning the background with a suede matboard. My question is, what kind of adhesive should I use to mount the acrylic rods to the suede? I know with the acrylic to acrylic the glue is mor of a chemical reaction than adhesion. Worst case scenario, I can mount them to a new piece of acrylic, and but the matboard behind it, but I would prefer not to.

Thanks for your help

Why not cut multi openings in the mat the size of the rods. Put acrylic behind the mat. Position rods thru openings and fuse to acrylic back with solvent.

Acrylic rods to suede will not be a good bond IMO.

I had thoght about that, because I agree the bond between the suede @ rod will probablly not be very strong. & going through the matboard will provide more stability with a snug fit. i mis spoke earlier, However, there are a few that don't have rods, and need to be bonded directely to the base.

The solvent used to fuse the acrylic will evaporate and form a sovent vapour. What effect is this likely to have on the butterflies? It sounds risky to me! Do you still have the damaged butterflies to do a test with before taking a risk with the good ones?

To be really safe, I wouldn't use the solvent at all! Can you roughen the surface of the rod with an abrasive and push it into a blob of epoxy resin instead. I wonder if anybody knows what is released from epoxy as it cures and if there is a problem, or not?

I would not rush into this one, without doing some research first!
