It's been decided that I need more RAM on this desktop. It's been determined that I have two slots open and that I could use 1GB in each.

It's also been decided that I don't want to do it. Don't know how I've become so chicken when I'm such a great picture framer. :)

Am I able to do this on my AMD Sempron HP desktop? Is it easy, or should I pay someone to do it? Done it before: so what's up with the reticence now? I do have two grown kids who'll help...but I'm feeling a little sheepish about not tackling it. Should I buy it online? About $60.00 for 2GB from Crucial.

Have no fear, it's a fairly easy process.

Most computers open right up without tools, and the chips snap into place. You'll want to UNPLUG the computer first, and make sure you are discharged of any static electricity.

They usually recommend keeping the chips the same brand and speed, but in more cases than others it will usually work fine; but at the speed of the slowest chip.

The hardest part is making sure you buy the correct chips.

Crucial is a great place to figure out what you need, etc.
Buy online from them is a safe bet. You can get it cheaper maybe from NewEgg, but since you want it easy and painless, just get from Crucial so you are sure you get what you need.

Do not buy in a computer store. Often the memory in the stores is second tier.
The better stuff is sold directly online and to OEM's....
Stores often get the "flaw boards".... ;) LOL

You could likely install it yourself. It is not that hard at all!
Literally a 5 minute job. If you can do framing you can stick in memory.

I'm a Mac guy, but I have PC's for the POS at my shop. I bought a new PC on sale about a month ago. I got a couple 1GB RAM chips from Newegg, and had them installed in about 5 minutes. Painless, harmless, and easy.

Now if only PC's were that way to use!

Steven, it's an HP Compac Presario, AMD Sempron 3400+, 994 Mhz, 448 MB Ram, 1.79 Ghz......but I can't find a specific model number under My Computer. Must be there? Computer is almost three years old.

It will be on a sticker on the face of the computer. Windows won't know that info, though.

Mike, the only numbers on the front are SR1620NX. That it?

If My Computer is supposed to tell me about this thing, why is it that the model number is not there? I can rather understand that, but just seems I should be able to find it somewhere other than paper documentation.

Roma. Of Course!

Installing RAM is easy, but if you haven't seen your kids in a long time, call them in and have them do it for you. Offer a good meal, cup of coffee, or just some good family time. My mom called me in a couple of times to "install" keyboards, mice and even to run AntiVirus software. It's usually not the hardware that's the issue!

Call them and if they can't come in, then you can call later and say how long you had to "struggle" to install the RAM, you've gotten the "support" of ten tech posts already! they'll feel guilty and be there for dinner Sunday! :) The RAM guilt should be good for at least 10 visits before they find out you can install sound cards, video cards and hard drives!

That's it. That is your HP model number. It uses 184-pin DIMM DDR PC3200

Here is the recommended memory:

$59 for 2gb (2x1gb) from the vendor directly:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR1620NX

You can also find suitable ram at newegg.com for about $44:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...FG=CFG003Presario SR1620NX&name=2GB (2 x 1GB)

Well, I ordered the RAM from Crucial. They had a little program which reviewed my computer and chose the product based on that result. I'll be receiving 2GB in 1 GB pieces.

And....it's what Mike suggested. Nice dovetail there and makes me glad Mike's around. :)

May even install it myself....but with my kids or brother close by.

Looking forward to improved performance. :popc:
