quarter-round for floaters

To hold in the back side of a floater (glass front, plexiglass back) we've been using quarter-round cut to size. Is this the common practice or is there a better, faster way?

We either use glaziers points covered by a tiny mat or balsa wood painted black to match the frame back that we also paint black. Probably because we sell balsa and we occasionally have some scrap mat board...
