When i cut out ANY fonts with my computerized mat cutter, the ONLY way i have found to attach the mat with the letter cutouts to an uncut mat mat is with 3M Vac-U-Mount. How do YOU do it  ? Thanks.

So Mitchel, when you spray the letters for attaching are you spraying the backs of the individual letters or the whole of the back mat? How do you account for over spray of either area?

If you spray the letters how do you keep the bevel crisp? I can only imagine the glue and goo I would get on the bevels. And if you just spray the whole of the back mat There must be glue in the areas where the letters don't cover the back mat.

I would think a spray glue would be the last technique I would use for attaching letters. So please enlighten me how you do it cleanly.

I like the idea of a wet glue. I had used atg for a project this summer but the heat and humidity un-stuck the work I did :)

Bob,
I don't attach the letters. I attach the matboard the letters were cut out of. When sprayed from the back, the bevel is not facing up. I use Vac-U-Mount, but, it DOES spray rather course because of the way the release nozzle is designed. To get it to spray fine and thin, i replace the nozzle with one a can of spray paint. It works great. Try it. 93M use to use this kind of nozzle 5-6 years ago.)

Ahh, that makes more sense, thanks for enlightening me :)

I also like the idea of replacing the nozzle. Does that work for spray fixative too? That stuff clumps and sprays drops...

Wait...... Im confused....... You spray glue your mats together?

I really don't understand why so many folks here are so anxious to use spray adhesives for various purposes when there are so many alternatives that are more effective, more controllable, far less toxic, and a lot less expensive too.
 Rick

I'm thinking it's a longevity, or perceived longevity of the bond they are after. I stopped using sprays when I read the MSDS on them. When I read that the can was like 95% VOC it also turned me off. When I had to scrape 1/4" thick layer of over spray off a huge piece of glass, and found out it was a mirror :) well I stopped using the stuff.

I still have artists that want it, pastelists usually. If someone asks specifically for a spray mount I will use it, but I prefer other methods.

You already asked and he already answered :)
Why couldn't you just use tabs of ATG and dots of white glue?
 Rick
Guess the spray is doing this part of it's job :)

...and they kill fewer brain cells. And I can't spare the few I have left....

And it doesn't even hold well!

Mitchel- If you use small tabs of ATG along with dots of a good PVA glue like CornerWeld, you will be able to position the parts (including the "doughnut hole" elements of looped letters) just where you want them, and then press into place. The ATG holds everything in place while the glue (which does the long-term work of keeping everything where you put it) has a chance to dry. This method is far less messy and far less dangerous to your health and the environment than any spray. Besides, spray bonds dry up and let go with time, while the PVA should hold until after we are all gone.
