I am new to framing. I have been letting some of the buisnesses know that I am doing framing and if they would like me to frame here's my card ect. I had a small and really cool gift store/ soup and coffee shop owner, hand me a small 5" x7"tourist painting from Paris that his one of his customers brought in. Told me to frame it and surprise him. I asked him if he like to see some samples. No just frame it to work with his decor and bring it back. No price discussed. I want him to see what I can do, in hope for future sales, gain him as a customer. I am also an artist, so I decided to do this job by taking an old shawdow box frame that was slightly bigger and I could float the small oil in it. I faux painted it. Turned out really cool, kind of a mocha/ tortise shell look. I'm not out any money except for some paint/sealer and my time. My questions, is this a good idea for promtion? He has gift area and may be up for carrying some small painted frames or other frames for future. Should I charge him for my time and let him know this is not usually what I charge? Thank for any input.:)

The one thing I have learned is that even if I am doing something at no charge I always let the person know what the real selling price is. It puts a value to it. Other wise it is felt that it is of very little value or no cost value.

Would I do this for no charge, well I am not sure if I would. If I realy felt that I could get some very good business from him then maybe, but I am more apt to charge him something.

I agree I need to let him know what the regular price would be. It does add value to work. When I first started selling my artwork it was inexpensive. People percieved it as not as valuable. Now that my prices have gone up, I sell more, and my work is percieved as valuable. I am thinking or charging for my time. Thanks for the input:)

Or if you don't want to charge him much, but you want to find out what he would consider a fair price, tell him that this time you are only charging him $x, but would appreciate it if he would make a donation to ________ (fill in a local charity) for the difference between what you are charging and what he was expecting to pay....

Establish a good relationship with them, yes. Give too much away? No. Don't fall into the trap of filling the walls of their coffee shop with consigned art or consigned framed prints at your expense. Usually your return is very little and you have alot more out than you get back. It only benefits the coffee shop owner by having beautiful stuff on his walls for free. A little goes a long way when people don't expect it, so be careful not to go overboard.

I dropped off the piece. He loved it and asked me what he owed me. I let him know what it would normally be, but told him this was a promotional piece. He told me he had a woman who moved out of the area who had done this type of work and it went over well. He also wants to carry my work and wants a little promotional package about myself for display!!! I also have heard good things about him from other people who have worked with him!!!
