I was very intrigued by this system when I saw it demonstrated at the TCMoulding open house. The promo literature reads as follows:

</font>
  • Non-flammable water-based formulation with less than 1% volatile organic compound

    Fast drying rate

    No bleed through

    Permanent</font>
Has anyone tried this? Pros? Cons? Is it as good as it sounds?

The primary question I have for any spray is: What are the negative side affects? Despite what the manufacturer tells you (and that's often darned little), do you know how much of the airborne product will be inhaled by you and your employees and/or be leached into the environment? Even if you have a spray booth, some of those particles have to be fugitive.

I recently asked a 3M tech about their new spray and was told that yes, I could easily breath some of the rubber particles during use. Rubber particles? Needless to say, they were unable to give me details regarding deleterious effects. I chose to roll my glue.

The literature I picked up and the product demonstration included a Material Safety Data Sheet. It's much too long to go into here but is probably available on the 3M web site or by request.

It contains the usual CYA exhortations not to drink the stuff or spray it up your nose. It also lists hazardous air pollutants at 0% and volatile organic compounds at <=1%.

This has GOT to be better than the Vac-U-Mount spray I'm using now.

I'm just wondering if it sticks things down in a more-or-less permanent way.

hey Kit- Nice to meet you at TCM. I have used it for fabric mats so far and love the tool and glue.Follow the directions in removing the cap-very important. I ruined my first container of glue by twisting the safety incorrectly (heh, I'm left handed)and removed the plastic collar that is supposed to remain on the canister. It has a short open time of about two minutes (the literature doesn't give any specific directions)and is posistionable. Still waiting for the info on the stability of it though; I never believe what reps tell you,they always love their products.

Kit and Scott - glad you made it this weekend. The components of the Pro-Spray adhesive in a way make it more permanent than chemical based adhesives. In other words, you cannot use adhesive release or other products to remove the art because it is water based. We helped 3M in the early development of this product and it has come a long ways. I think that this is going to prove to be a great hit. We recently experimented holding wolven (sic) rugs down with the adhesive on standard mat board. Two weeks hanging on the wall and no give so far. Believe me this things are heavy! As far as the safety of the product goes, like any airborn spray you will inhale some. Just like everyday we all inhale things we shouldn't. It is a safer product than most chemical based sprays and I think 3M should be applauded for improving the safety in our shops and workplaces.
