Denny, it might depend on how you plan to use the photos. If you want good-looking photos, but don't care if they outlive you, there are any number of inexpensive printers from Epson, HP and others that will work very well for you.
If you want prints that will last for several generations, you need a printer that takes pigmented inks, rather than dyes. Epson has been the leader in this area, but I believe HP and others may be moving into pigmented inks as well.
With the right combination of paper and ink, these printers will produce photos that will resist fading for 150 years or more. Anne's 1280 is probably in that class, as is my 2000P. The latter is very slow and guzzles expensive ink cartridges, but it makes dazzling, large format prints that should hold up for a very long time - in case anyone cares.
