Hi everyone! We're doing our Pricing for Profit Survey in July, and it would be great to get input from my esteemed colleagues here at The Grumble. If you'd like to participate (all numbers are strictly confidential), go to www.decormagazine.com and download the PDF of the survey. Complete the survey and fax it back to us at 314-824-5591. Results will be published in the July issue of DECOR. Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry John,

The form I got in the mail, I thought was not well thought out and was confusing. That's why I put it in the trash. I believe any results would have to be viewed with skepticism.

Does anybody else feel different or should I go back to school and learn to read better. Lord knows, I need to learn to spell better.

Now, this post is finally applicable. I mistakenly made the following comments about Bob Shirks post on the E-tips survey.

Surveys like this need to follow a consistent format to ensure the answers given are relevant to the baseline-it is a comparative survey.

Some question might be worded more clearly, but then you might get skewed answers that aren't of use comparatively. The purpose is to give an overview of current pricing and allow a year to year comparison.

Two suggestions: Answer those questions that you have a definite answer for, leave the questionable blank. The answers still fit into the larger scheme of things.

Second, don't rely upon the data for anything other than comparative analysis. For a more accurate appraisal of your own operation, shop your own particular market. At least those prices are relevant. And save your own surveys year to year to do the same comparatives for thwe local market.

So, framer, dig that form out of the trash and fill out the info you feel comfortable with. It does provide some value, even incomplete

I thought so too. I did not throw it away and looked back over it last night. I still plan to fill it out as best as I can. The more of us that fill it out, the more of an "average" we will get.

Well, I'd like to know what not well thought out means specifically. We developed this survey in cooperation with five major industry suppliers. I flatter myself to think that between us and them, we came up with something that was, at the least, well thought out. I know that any industry like ours that attempts a survey such as this is dealing in generalities, but these do have some value, as long as people take the time to complete the survey instrument. A survey, in the end, is only as good as two things: the instrument and the responses. I think the survey instrument is sound. Now we just have to get the responses.
