Crescent 1604

1 each ~ 11 X 14 with 5 rectangular openings and 3 round openings all varying sizes.

2 each ~ 14 X 18 with 9 rectangular openings and 2 round and two
radius corner openings all varying sizes.

My price was $ 33.57 for the 11X 14.
$ 52.15 - 25% for the two 14 X 18's = $ 78.23

Total $ 111.80 + tax.

Customer needed to talk with his wife but I think he was surprised at the price.

Just wondered how others would come in...

Not a rush job.

Expand on how you broke down the charge for the multi openings.
My total for all three mats is about double your price. I would also discount the second 14x18 so they all would be a tad under $200

I charge .65/ui for the mat with the first opening and then $6 per extra openings... especially with openings that are all different.

36.45 for the first,
135.45 for the second two. I suspect I would have discounted the second of those by about the same as you did.
We are in coastal Massachusetts.

I had my regular charge for a Crescent rag mat + 3.00 per extra rectangular and 4.00 for each round or radius corner opening.

I'd normally charge a little more per opening but with that many openings I fudged slightly.

Discounted the 14X18's since they were identical.

Looks like I am not out of line.

I'm cutting on a Wiz 8000. If I was cutting by hand I wouldn't have discounted the opening charges or the multiple mat charges... false logic, I know to some degree. I don't believe anyone else around me has a CMC so if he calls around he'll finds I'm not out of line.

Unfortunately people compare custom cut mats to the tan, black, white or cream die cut mats they get pre-fabbed at the BB's.

There's the source of your price resistance. Not anything you did.
If you didn't have a CMC you would have to charge a LOT more for the radius corners. That's a lot of work, and not easy to get consistent results by hand. Reminds me of my OLD mat design book by Sean Hunt.

Just called Michael's for grins...

5-7 day turn around... didn't specify what mat board...

11 X 14 $ 47.00
14 X 18 $ 70.00 each

Total $ 187.00 + tax

No coupons or discounts apply.

Makes me about $ 70.00 cheaper and I'm using a Crescent rag board.

Ask me if I'm surprised...

About $50 for the first, and about $70 for each of the second ones. Never let the customer know how easy it is to do these with the CMC.

... Never let the customer know how easy it is to do these with the CMC.

Of course it is much easier than by hand, but a rail cutter doesn't cost over 10K either.

I hope he does call around...

That's right, a rail cutter doesn't cost 10 grand. So with a rail cutter, you need to charge for all the labor involved. With a CMC, you need to charge for all the investment involved. Never let them think it's easy.

$120 for all. Located in suburban Philadelphia.

As an aside, we had a woman come in on the 18th that needed a jersey framed for Christmas. She went to AC Moore first because of their 60% off framing sale. First off the couldn't have it done before end of January second WITH the 60% off they quoted her $320.

She picked it up from us yesterday and saved money to boot.

Do you really think they wont find out some day how simple this is with a CMC, as CMC’s become more widely used ……you could possible end up looking like you were ripping them off.

I have noticed that I rarely have to explain a CMC these days, most people know of them and their capabilities.

Just a though on this subject

If they do think it's that easy, then I'll simply mention that mine costs me $13,000, and they are paying for the precision and speed that $13,000 buys.

I have an 8000 and I charge for the time to set up the layout.
10 bucks for each board.
1st one 41.14
2nd 2 at 33 bucks each. 66.00
107.14
+30.00
137,14 total

My price (in Aussie Dollars) would be the charge for a basic single opening matt plus $5 per opening.

First one 11 x 14 @ & $55

Second two List price $87 but, probably, I would only charge $70 if they were identical.

It is also quite reasonable to add a design charge if the layout is a difficult one.

Paul is dead right about the C.M.C. Although it takes the hard work out of complex matcutting it doesn't come cheaply and someone has to pay for that investment.

It is also worth noting that those pre-cut matts sold at the big stores are probably only "standard" (or substandard) card and are cut to "standard" measurements and layouts. Something custom made has to be worth more and trying to compare prices like that is illogical.
