16x20 cc glass replacement

But here is the full story;

Grump comes in. Not responding to my cheerful 'good morning'. Throws metal frame with broken glass on my design table, some shards now sticking out. Metal frame is a ready made with carpy metal thingies to hold it together. No hanging hardware (and I don't have anything that would fit). Banged up, see problems with fitting/unfitting.
Cut my finger (the one I by now would like to give him) while trying to pick it up to turn it around.
Quoted price. Grump looks at me; 'just for a piece of glass'????? And walks out.

(fortunately after that, my day did get better with actual customers)

What price would you have quoted?

These are my list charges: $18.90 for the glass itself. I wouldn't charge an 'unfit' charge because its metal and usually easier to take apart...but of course I'd charge a fitting charge, which is $19.80. If they really wanted to go with conservation glass but give me "the look" I might even offer to give it to them for $25 total without promising the ability to give them a hanger. From the other side of the counter, almost $40 for a glass replacement is too high.

Honestly, if it seemed too much for the customer, I'd ask them if they want to go with regular glass for $9.45 and show them (roughly) how put it in themselves. Considering its only a $2 piece of glass at my cost, I still come out a little ahead.

Speaking of, I've been forewarned of a large glass replacement coming in today. Based on the fact that it contains broken glass, I might just have to charge that "unfit" charge (usually about 1/2 of my regular fitting charge).

SW Glass $7.00 he can put in his self
PIA & labor fee $25.00

estimate free
new metal frame & glass $48.00
glass & metal reclaiming fee $5.00

The glass alone would be $20, and then there would be a $16 charge to take it apart and clean it out, and another $16 charge to refit.

And I had to do a glass/frame replacement job on a piece that was shipped from China, and it was absolutely destroyed inside the box. It took me half an hour to simply get the frame out of the box while the customers stood there and watched. It took me another 10 minutes or so after they left for me to package up all the broken glass and get it out to the dumpster. That night, driving home, I felt something scratching against my chest -- it was a shard of glass inside my shirt.

Let him do it himself, if he thinks its too much money.

My price came at 48 something, incl tax.

I felt exactly the same Paul. It was not an easy fit/unfit job. There were also glass shards everywhere, not just one clean break, but little thingies stuck in the metal frame as well.
I do not donate my time.

Not to mention that evil phrase: spring clips.

Anyone love digging spring clips out of a frame with broken glass, where the spring clips are buried way back and deep into the backing? Yeah, we definitely overcharge for doing that.

just send him to M's and be sure he insists on 50% off.

Yesterday I sold a 16x20, reg. glass alone (for a wooden frame, no labor of any kind was required): $20.
Labor would have added another $15 or so. Customer was happy.

As PaulSF said, let them try their luck elsewhere and see how much better they'll do.

Maybe they'll bleed to death over $20....:p

We would charge 28.00 for glass and 28.00 for cleaning it and refitting.
If they balked at that I would just cut the glass and wrap it and ask the guy to clean up his mess.

4500.00 for Medical charges and a close the shop fee for one day.

Plus tax

For us $13.20 for the glass and $20.70 for the unfit/fitting.

No tax here. :D

I'm right there with PAUL!

I have 3 charges: Take down and clean (glass slivers take FOREVER!), Cons. Clear Glass and metal fitting!

Very fair price!

We charge glass and a "customer's own frame" refit charge which is more than if it was our frame. If it was ours, we would not charge labor to refit replacement glass.
