I will be bringing two of my employees to the Las Vegas show in January. I would like one of them to take a hanging/mounting class and one to take a class on preservation (maybe these are one and the same). Does anyone have suggestions on specific classes or teachers, positive or negative?

Last year I took the Basics of Mounting class and Creative Mounting and Laminating, they were OK, covered a lot I already knew.

I've heard the schedule of classes and instructors will not be released until early November, unless you sign up for their VIP Gold Pass package - then Mid October, so your question may be premature.

You can download last years schedule [from Pictureframingmagazine.com] and this may give you an idea of what will probably be offered.

Good luck, and we will see you in Las Vegas.

Watch for the WCAF/National Conference educational schedule to be posted on the PFM website in a few weeks. For early notice, sign up now for their VIP Gold Pass. Here are some suggestions for instructors and preservation mounting classes that will probably be available there:

For preservation mounting of art on paper, all classes by Hugh Phibbs are exceptional. He usually teaches at least one session on hinging, and other sessions on non-adhesive supports.

Mounting of digital images is a big issue these days. I would look for a class by Chris Paschke or Paul MacFarland on that topic.

Paul MacFarland also teaches excellent classes on preservation mounting & framing canvas artworks.

For preservation mounting of three-dimensional objects, consider my class, "The Complete Guide to Shadowboxes and Framing Objects", consisting of a 3-hour lecture on enclosures and mounting, plus a 3-hour lecture/hands-on mounting session.
