I have gotten so much spam or junk email from joining the PPFA, always something coming in. Does anyone know how I can opt out of them sharing my email?

Well let me admit that it is a giant assumption that the junk mail is related to the PPFA, it might be coincidental, but to me it seemed like it started when I joined. Anyone could get my info from the PPFA, Decor, PFM, The G, Facebook or my website. I have no intention of making any waves with the PPFA.

I still lots of it and I quit the PPFA a year ago...still get the official e-mails from them also????

Are you talking general spam (fake software, male enhancement pills, etc), information about specific PPFA events/webinars, or marketing offers from other vendors within the PMA umbrella?

I think the problem is that the email addresses are publicly displayed on the website (or at least they used to be), and get harvested by spammers or marketing people within the industry. I expressed this concern a couple times in the past, and this thread will probably cause it to be re-evaluated if it hasn't already been addressed.

It's best never to put an email address on a website or public forum, for this reason. It will get harvested and receive all kinds of spam.

We signed up with a special dedicated email ppfa@ my domain .com and it gets about 90%+ of the spam that we receive. At some point I would like to change my email address on file with PPFA, so I can turn the compromised one off and start fresh with a clean address.

We use a dedicated email for every vendor or group that we belong to, so i can track the source of who is selling my name etc.

The trade shows also sell the email addresses to a lot of folks. I know this because we do the same thing, with a dedicated email address for each trade show. example: decorATL2008@ourwebdomain.com What we do is shut off these dedicated emails after each show, and the problem goes away :) Then we make a new one for the next show.

I think you just admitted that this post is unfair to PPFA. Why not ask the moderators to delete this and start over with a different slant.

Great News

PPFA listens and was quick to react.

While the original concern may have just been a coincidence, there was a valid concern that the public could search by zip code or state at www.findapictureframer.com. Some records would display a contact email address, in addition to the website and physical address of the shop. Since a search by zip code (extra step) had to be done, it's unlikely that regular (automated) spammers harvested any addresses in this manner.

I know that this has been used a bit in the past, from dealers of Chinese oil paintings, moulding importers, artists, etc). I received such emails personally. This has been brought to their attention today, and the IT department made an immediate change:

Email addresses will no longer be displayed in the search results, for the consumer "find a picture framer" feature. The consumer can click through to the website, and contact the framer directly. Most framers have a mail/feedback form on their site, to hide their true email address.

Thanks for listening, and being so responsive, PPFA!

Nah...while I will think twice about naming names, it's a learning experience I can live with, not the first time I put my foot in my mouth.

And Sheila at the PPFA was really very responsive and emailed me within and hour of my posting the thread, assuring me that they do not sell or market my email address. Thanks Sheila!
