I've never ordered plaques for poster prints and wondered who other folks use. Lieberman's would be convenient for print orders, but wondered how they might compare and who would you use if you sent them in.

I'm in Michigan.

What are you talking about? metal engraved plaques? or a plak it service?

plak it service

Dave I use Plak it from Shaw Enterprises / www.mostlyart.com, good price, weekly delivery, no hassle. I expect you would have shipping involved because of your location.

Mostly art offers all the same services as Colorplak plus its regionally located, I believe JPaul's website has a link to them for poster as well?

Colorplak now ships everything to us via FedEx ground, so it really doesn't matter where you are. We have done thousands of pieces with them and they are a top quality company.

We also use them for "mount and laminate" where the image is mounted to MDF and laminated and we put it into a frame without glass. Works great for oversized pieces, and with a liner/frame combo.

They also do digital printing, which is some of the best we have seen- both on paper and on canvas. All of their prints on canvas have a full sheet of laminate over them. They do not crack and the corners do not rub off. You can order the pieces stretched or unstretched.

We recently completed a job for the VA where the client furnished us a disk of jpegs, we sent the disk to Colorplak and they printed and colorboxed them (if you are not familiar with this term, go to the website, it is one of the product offerings) and then shipped them back to us completed. All we had to do was add security hardware and install them.

Colorboxing is a great, cost effective framing alternative and we have been very successful with it.

Thanks, Randy and Rob.

Still wondering about the quality of Lieberman's if I am ordering a print from them... anyone using their plaquing service when ordering prints?

Hey Dave-

Don't slam me for saying this, but my suggestion would be to try both of them on something you think would sell in your store (or a sign for your wall, or a personal photograph). Compare the quality of the materials used, the packaging, how long it takes for the order to be processed etc.. Your experience might be different than our (or others) but I am a very satisfied customer.

Also, I believe that Colorplak has accounts with most major poster distributors and you can order posters from them at 50% off that will come to you finished (no middleman) - so you won't pay shipping from the poster company or to Colorplak (though I believe they pay shipping from your location to their plant and you pay for the return.) Lots of edge colors and styles too.

One thing I noticed immediately is that Colorplak's colorbox (which is similar to Plak-its flushmount) is a bit thicker and I do not believe Colorplak uses 1/8" masonite for the face. I thibk Colorplak's product is all MDF and the finished box size is deeper.

Colorplak also does a Deco Box with very deep sides. We did the entire offices of Time Warner Cable in them and they looked great and the client was very happy.

I have a company from Tucson that I use called Lamtech. They are kind of expensive so it probably wouldnt make sense for you when you figure in the shipping. Maybe there is another independent dealer near you? The plaque technique used to be a great option for me, but since the price has gone up considerably it doesnt make much sense for me to use it. I have a much better margin on with framed orders so i only show this in rare ocassions now.

There should be local companies that do plak service for delivery either themselves or thru a local distributor if you have one. In Buffalo I can have plaks mounting done from Color Plak, Super Plak or Plak-it.

Big ones get purty danged heavy - big waste of packaging and lots of shipping costs, one would imagine.....

ColorPlak in Seattle area used to have a deal going with several of the print companies like Imagekind where you tell Ted which poster you want, he gets it in his weekly shipment, and charges you only what it costs him(no ship and cheaper than you can get it), plaks it and ships out.
So what would have been a 3-4 wk order, is back to 10days 2wks. and saved you and your customer a bundle.

he also will ship you a stack of FRPs that you just slap on your order, and give to UPS.. he picks up the incoming shipping.
