How does the G determine post count? I just noticed something.

In the Tru Vue thread, my post #151 of the thread was my 2,608 post and then when I replied to another query, my post #153 in the same thread was also my 2,608 post..........

And now the counter shows this post as 2,609. So it the count, "per thread" and not "per post?" meaning multiple posts within the same thread only count as one post?

The count is your current total. All your posts that you have ever made will currently show 2609. As soon as you make your next post all will be 2610.

Then why do two of my posts have the same post count?

Maybe I explained it wrong. You have made 2610 posts since you have joined theGrumble.

ALL posts you have ever made will always show your current total.

If you go right now and look at every post you have ever made, the post count will be 2610.

The next time you make a post ALL posts that you have ever made will show 2611.

Every post you look at will have the same post count. Look at one then post another and all posts will have the new count no matter how old the posts are.

For instance, on this thread BOTH of your posts now show as 2610. If you go back and look at the very first post you ever made on the G (or this version of) you will see that miraculously, that was also your 2610th post.

And if you read the preface to the count it says "Posts :" not "Post Number". Presumably "Posts: " means the number of posts you have made, otherwise it would read something else.

Rick,
Not all of those images are 'posts'! The third one is a 'newel post'!

There are two 'ballisters', two 'columns' and a 'leg'. :)

Just thought I would clear that up! ;)

The only important thing to remember, Rob, is that with 2610 posts, you're a newbie, regardless of what your status says.

I guess that means I've graduated from being a "poster" to a "columnist".

I have less posts than Rob, but wouldn't consider myself a 'newbie'!

Some of us may not have a huge number of posts, but have been here a very, very long time! It just might mean that we don't flap our gums as much as some others do! ;)

Ormond,

Tied with you on time registered on the Grumble. (Ahead of most)

Ahead of you on number of postings. (Well behind Ron)

Oh...that's right, it's not a contest. ;)

Quality vs. quantity.

Osgood, you could have combined those two posts.

I think you're trying to pad your thread count.
I'm just a slow thinker, Ron. It takes me a while to carefully consider my answers and sometimes there is a ........................................................................delay!

Let's all post some posts and see if the post count counts?

Referencing by post number isn't too reliable anyway since mods can delete whole threads. I'd use my own internal numbers and archive them locally, either physical print out or develop a system to save the whole pages to a numbered file with a folder per company. Then if they want to see just mail them the file.

From what I can tell there are three different numbers that relate to posts:

  • Thread number - when a thread is started it is assigned a number. This thread is #749521.
  • Post number - every thread has a hierarchical list of post, classified as Post #, i.e. this post is #29, but by itself that tells you nothing - you also have to know the thread #.
  • Every post a user makes is added to their Post count. This is displayed along with current avatar, current status, current location, current age, etc in the area to the left of the post. This information is dynamic and reflects the information at the time the page is generated.

If the post counter keeps updating with each new post then why didn't the post count in his comment increase as well? He is over 2612 now but his comment still says "my 2610Th" post.... shouldn't it update and say 2612th?

:)

This thread is getting as bad as post-op, so let's post a post that has a post-op therapy post involved fo everyone who is tired of these posts.
