i know a good few of you guys here do custom printing and framing, just wondering do you use a pos and if so

which one and does it hand custom print pricing

ie put in dimesions, choose paper, etc and it works out price

or do you just use a price list for standard sizes and price to the closest one?

I use FrameReady and can set it up to price printing a number of ways, but none of them are particularly designed for printing. With FR you can set up the glass section to price based on the lite size used rather than the square inches. So you can put in your different photo sizes or roll sizes in my case. I can put in 10x17, 12x17, 14x17 etc for a 17" roll of paper and then the same for 24" and 44". It will then choose the closest size for the print that I am selling and charge for that size. What this means is that an 11x14 would come out of a 12x17 and charge for that assuming that any leftover would be waste.

although it does mean a 16*12 would come out at the same price too

at present i do it with an excel spreadsheet working on sq inches and ink coverage

along with running cost, wastage and markup

all i was hoping for was something that ment i didnt have to run excel and a pos and enter figures twice etc

I use specialty soft for pricing printing. I determine the price per united inch of the substrate, ink, labor, waste factor, etc. for different paper/canvas type and then add an item for each in the POS. When I enter the width and height, my POS calculates the price. I am thinking of changing my pricing scheme or at least add extra labor for prints larger than 24x36 because oversize print sometimes require 2 people to handle to prevent them from creasing or folding.

I do have a display that has the prices for standard sizes to give my clients examples for pricing

Troy, I can do that as well, actually easier than what I described. My thought is if I am using a 17" roll of paper and I sell and 11x14 I want to charge based on the material I am actually using which would be closer to 12x17. Yes, a 12x16 would price out the same, but it also would take the same amount of paper.

But by my price theory, they are paying for that extra ink even if it is not being used. As to the larger sizes, it depends on how you set it up and what papers you stock. If your running everything off of 44" rolls, then yes an 11x14 priced out at a 12x44 would not be appropriate, but if you use 17,24 & 44 rolls, then it wouldn't kick to the largest roll size unless both dimensions are over 24". If you put 36" rolls into the mix, then it would get even closer.

Of course in the real world we generally don't print like this and try to gang up jobs.

I guess what I am saying is that there are a number of ways to use a POS to price out printing from standard sizes to a more linear approach.
