Polystyrene glue other that super glue? Maybe...

I have always hated to use super glue when putting together frames with polystyrene mouldings. Well, i was searching the internet for anything other than "super glue" for gluing the four corners together. I "think" i found it and the price is very reasonable and it has a shelf life for several years. I was told this stuff is very strong... "High performance adhesive for difficult substrates. Bonds to metal, plastics, ceramics, magnets, wood, fabric, ABS, PVC, and some vinyl's." Excellent bonding adhesive for porous and non porous materials." The salesman said he is 99% positive it WILL work so I ordered some and if it DOES work i will keep you posted... ??

(And, yes, it IS safe to use... NO dangerous chemicals and it does dry fast, very fast....)

Can't wait to hear more about this adhesive.

Polyurethane will bond polystyrene mouldings. Trouble is, its usefulness is limited by its tendency to bubble up and expand 2 to 4 times its original volume as it cures. Just a drop of it works nicely in most cases, but 1.02 drops might ruin the moulding's finish.

Forget about those all purpose glues and get a glue made for the specific purpose. Plastics that dissolve easily in solvents are often cemented together with a solvent cement. IPS makes a “Weld-On” brand product specifically made for styrene. The solvent cement for acrylic may work too.

I tried it. It works! It's HEAT GLUE! No special glue gun needed. Details at their website: http://www.ptscoshop.com/surebonder_707_hot_melt_adhesive.htm

707 R10 - 5Lbs
(Approx. 95 Sticks)
7/16",1/2" x 10"

Much stronger than "3 - 4 drops of super-glue" and a heck of a lot cheaper! For porous or non-porous material. Only about 65 cents each per 10' stick (95 sticks in 5 lb. box ...a 10" stick goes a long, long way....)

(I tried it on WOOD mouldings it is very strong also, but, i confess it is not as strong as "Corner Weld".)

We bought this stuff at TAP Plastics called "Bond" -- 634 vinyl cement, says it's "excellent for any combination of vinyl, polystyrene, metal, glass, wood...."

I only used it once, to put a corner sample together, so I can't vouch for it. I'm new to using polystyrene, so are any oldsters out there using this?

Still skeptical this might actually work with sterene plastics... in the meantime, I'm sticking with my cyanoacrylate (a.k.a. super glue) until the glue gun heats up to this topic. Looking forward to more testimonials to this product.

PS. Does it actually require 40 minutes of pressure to cure full strength? :kaffeetrinker_2
