In order to get the best statistical results we need more people to vote on the polls. With 2200+ members, we could really get some indisputable answers here for all of us.

Thanks….

As much as I like answering questions (I actually enjoy political pollsters on the telephone), an effective, meaningful poll is extraordinarily difficult to design.

Unfortunately some of the previous polls on the Grumble have either been too complicated to be filled out quickly or too vague to be comprehensible.

Don't let that number of 2200+ fool ya, Richm. The vast majority haven't posted anything at all in the past 60 days - if ever - much less responded to polls.

If you get over 50 responses on a poll here, it must be a really hot topic.

And if you're talking about the wages poll: Of the fifty-or-so really active grumblers, I'll bet a good percentage are either employees or one-person shops. Most of the big employers are too busy keeping an eye on everyone to post here. ;)

Maybe somebody needs to design a poll to find out.

(My only employee in the past eight years works for dog biscuits.)

Wages are such a regional factor. If you want to compare wages, do it in your own market. There are many ways to collate much more meaningful data than a national poll.

It requires a little effort, but the results will be much more meaningful.

That is one of the smaller problems with The Grumble format. As Ron points out, only a few people out of the 2,200 or so registered members, are actually active players on The Grumble.

Most of us have limited time, so we only check out the forums we have the most interest in.

I usually just check out the main Grumble forum, sometimes I will scroll through business issues, but not very often, and that's about it.

I don't think I've even given the "Poles" forum a glance in the last six months or more.

richm,

The total membership at present is about 2257 members.

Of those members, over 1160 have never posted a single post on any forum here.

A few less than 1100 have posted at least once.

Of that 1100, over 440 have only posted 2 times or less.

315 have reached "Grumbler" status by posting 20 times or more.

The number drops to 260 for those who have posted over 30 times.

Those last figures include all those Grumblers who have posted from 30 times all the way to over 7000 times.

So that means that, at most, 260 +/- are regularly constributing to the Grumble to one degree or another.

So all of the information, all of the answers posted and most of the questions, and all of the poll responses can be attributed to a bit over 10% of the total registrations on the Grumble.

I find it interesting that most of the people who have registered on the Grumble aren't responding to any problems, questions, polls, and aren't contributing any kind of opinion or experience at all to any of the forums! How can people in the framing business visit a framing forum and read all the varied posts without the least urge to post their feelings or an answer to a question?? I couldn't just sit there in front of my computer reading all these bits of information and problems without joining in to help someone or to post my experiences in my life and business.

The only unknown that I wonder about is how many of these over 2200 members haven't returned to the Grumble at all since they registered??

Tom your last query makes me wonder,"can or does Framer have a way to register the number of HITS (Not post) that a given registered Grumbler makes?"
I would love to see this statistic so as to indicate the number of individuals that become diinchanted after one or just a few visits.
I for one TOTALY agree with your statemnet about not being able to see others in the industry ask questions about the trade I am in and not reply (Of course it would be nice if my numerious replies where rally of any use to other FRAMERS). But then that does pose another question: are all who register actually in the BIZ? Furthermore is this documented also?

I would venture a guess that a great deal of people that register are manufacturer reps or employees, with a "gag order" not to post. Countless reps have brought up the grumble at trade shows, commented on threads, and told me that they're not allowed to post because it might reflect poorly on their employer.

Many employees have this as a condition of their employment contract.

ELECTRONIC BULLETIN BOARDS AND CHAT ROOMS
Our directors, officers and other employees are prohibited from participating in any manner in
Internet or other on-line bulletin boards or chat rooms on matters concerning Michaels or related
topics unless our Chief Executive Officer or Chief Financial Officer authorizes your participation
in a planned discussion of non-inside information occurring in an electronic forum.
The rest are probably intimidated, don't have anything to say, or are doing better than any of us and too busy selling frames to jump in.

Thanks Mike ,I too have heard the same prohibition on reps .However that was the first time i have seen anything in writing . I curious where did you come by it?
On A different note ,while I agree that vendors and their reps do lurk .It would seem that they would almost have to be constantly changeing their sign ons (If each registrant had only one look see and no replies),In which case their IPS? would identifie them as repeat lurkers, wouldn't it?
As for being intimadated ,in one way i might understand (If all we had was purely TECHNICAL conversations),but there is a host of segments that ANYONE can join in (And sometimes do).
And as for the "Guys who are just to busy makeing MONEY" they must have some time ,after all they did sit down and register. Maybe the reps are the only people remaining quiet in order to pick the brains of those of us who can't resist offering what little we do know.LOL

The quote is from michaels.com, with credits to Marc Lizer for finding it for a previous thread. specifically: http://www.michaels.com/online/departments/corporate/images/CodeofBusinessConductandEthics.pdf
As far as reps, it seems to be a fairly universal policy. One thing for sure, they do follow it and are current on threads. I think that's a great thing and can understand the restriction.

Not necessarily. There is no urgency to post once a person makes an account. They can come back as many times as they want to read existing messages, and the account remains intact. A person doesn't even HAVE to make an account to read the messages. However, if they wish to post it is necessary to make an account and have their email address verified first.

Hopefully all the shy people will see this and jump in to say HI. Hopefully they'll go into the POLLS section too and participate in previously posted polls. There are some real treasures in there.

It seems to me that there are only 260 +/- of us out there who have the smarts to, "BAM take it up another notch". I have been in and around this business all my life, and the Grumble still dispenses useful information to me on a daily basis. This makes me happy.

And have you noticed that 240 of you are from North Carolina? Why is that?

Which squirrel picture? There have been so many.
