How long should a point driver last? How do you know when it needs to be replaced?

My current driver doesn't seem to be driving the points in all that far. I tighten the screw as tight as it'll go and yet the points don't really get driven in all that far. Especially in hard woods.

Replace the driver or the "defective" parts?

How do you know how old one is? No serial number on this one (black fletcher), well worn and "feels" good to use, just curious about longevity of the unit!

I have replaced the driver spring in mine once as it had shattered inside - a fairly simple job to do if you hold your tongue in the right position, although it's no longer black as the tool is taped together with a variety of different tapes it works fairly well.

I'm sorry. That was so "Jay-ish".

I've had my Red Devil for 30 years and my black Fletcher for about 8 or so... Both still working fine.

I guess it all depends on the use.

If you send it to United Mfrs., they'll refurbish it and it'll be good as new! I think there's a tension spring that wears out over time...you might be able to fix it yourself or you might open it and have little parts go flying all over the shop(don't ask me how I know)

At how many points per frame?

I got a laser printer from a freind. It had a self test feature and according to the internal counter it has printed 62,761 pages!

I took the point driver apart, and the counter wasn't in there anywhere!
