I've been here for a while and seen many posts in which framers use different plys of mat board. And I was wondering when and where you should use the different plys? ( I do know the difference between 1 ply tissue and 2 ply Charmin, and specifically where to use it.:p) Is it just for variety and design or are there times when it is used for a specific purpose? Also I am curious about a "closed corner frame" I keep hearing about, is that a frame that is already constructed, or something else? Sorry for asking soo many questions, I guess I just want to learn as much as I can, before I can't! Randy J.

Hey, Randy ... all questions are good questions. Only the ones not asked are dumb.

;)

The different plys are primarily a design element but also serve some functional uses.

2 ply board is pretty much the minimum for using a rag board for creating separation of the art work from nasty stuff. 4, 6 and 8 are better.

The 6 and 8 ply really give depth to a frame package. I use them often sometimes even combining 8 and 4 ply boards to create a 12 ply mat.

A closed corner frame is a frame that is constructed prior to the finish or leafing being applied vs a frame that is made from a finished moulding that is cut and mitered to make a frame. Often the frame is hand carved or compo is applied prior to finishing to create a design or pattern.

Thanks Dave! It's kinda what I thought about the different plys. As far as the closed end frames, that's cool, but I imagine they are quite costly. I like looking at the ones in the Design section of the G, the company the builds those hand crafted frames is marvelous!! Wonder what they cost!!!!!
