PLEASE HELP!

I am wondering what is the best possiable & safest way to remove mildew off of a oil canvas painting? My customer said it was screwed to the wall outside on their deck, so im guessing because of that, the humidity, an no air to breath is how the mildew came into effect. Any Suggestions???

Wait a sec, they screwed it to a wall outside and they're worried about mildew??? Is this the type of customer who is going to take the advice of sending it to a conservator? Do you suppose they'd then put it back outside and somehow expect that it magically will be immune to mildew then?

Lysol disinfectant spray. Kills mold, mildew, and it's odors..... :).

Yes, Im guessing it will be going back outside. I thought the lady was crazy when she said it stays outside and wants the mildew off... I told her that it could possiably be cleaned but from being outside with all weather conditions it will just keep coming right back. So I told her I would still try and find out some helpful ways to possiably take it off...

Your assessment of this consumer seems accurate and quite reasonable.

Notwithstanding her unusual choice of display area and her request to undo its direct effects, if she understands that mildew propagates in outdoor conditions that are not likely to change much, and if she is willing to spend a few hundred dollars to have her canvas painting restored, then I suggest you:

1. Make sure she understands the folly of taking the term "Plein Air" so literally.

2. Make sure she understands that mildew is onyl one of several detriments to the canvas painting, and that continued outdoor display will surely ruin it.

3. Help her locate and contract a conservator to restore her canvas.

4. Take her money.
