I had a relatively normal sales day on Saturday and so far this week business has continued on - not at a normal level, but certainly better. I am getting little or no price objection and no rude needling about one thing or another.

Though only one has said it, I have the feeling some were purposely making efforts to support small independent businesses. (Support your local economy type of thing.) Has anyone else noticed this or have any business related "good will" stories to share?

Had a call from one of my customers the other day wanting to know if I had time to go and collect some work that need framing, as if I would not go.

When I got there it took about five minutes to go through the ten job's that needed framing and at that they could not find all the work they have to frame, I was send on my way in five minutes with the parting words " you know best what to do Dermot and if it is as good as the last lot's of framing we will be very happy", if only all customers were as easy to please as that and in addition they pay very good rates.

Iv'e noticed only one reply to Rosetl's post unlike the customer from **** stories which attract heaps of replies - This might say something about OUR attitudes as well as our customers . We have just had a record week - long may it continue and some really appreciative customers and one BITCH but even she gets quite a bit of framing done so she must also be treated with respect.
See ya later - Alan

I've had less than the usual number of customers coming in during the last 10 ten days, but I had a sterling example of my favorite type of customer come in about an hour ago. Here are the "specs."

Brand new customer

Referred by longtime customer who told here my shop is the only place to get framing - an exaggeration, but who am I to argue

So enthusiastic and excited that I was, at first, certain that she was trying to sell me something until

She wondered if I could maybe help her carry in some of the projects from her car. If that was inconvenient, she would just make several trips.

She thought my prices were quite reasonable, possibly because the last framing she had done was in Chicago and

There is no particular hurry, though she'd really like it if they could be ready before Christmas.

She asked good questions and had good comments about the framed samples on the wall

She laughed and she made me laugh

Had a customer like Ron's today. She brought in a glass replacement job and 4 ll X 14 prints and wanted them in metal frames with one mat. At MY convenience. No rush. Then she decided to run home (about two blocks away) and bring me some 8 x 10 photographs she'd had made of her son playing soccer. When she got back with the photos, she had also brought in 2 watercolors that she purchased at a local art fair. Showed me her new color scheme for her house and told me to do whatever I wanted to the watercolors and photos. Before she left she also purchased two prints that she will be selecting the framing for when she picks up the other 14 pieces that she left with me. I love this type of customer! Oh yeah, forgot to add that she pulled the checkbook out prior to my having to ask for the deposit and zipped out a check for more than half the price of the work!

My next customer wanted a black, inexpensive readymade frame so that he could frame a photograph for one of his family members. Before he left, he bought a box (6 frames) of the 8 x 10 frame and had decided to make copies of the photo for family members.

My whole day went like this. BUT, the rest of the week has been slow. Only 2 or 3 projects brought in each day.

Ron has pretty much summed up the perfect customer except for maybe one more point.

She offered to pay, in full/in cash, when asked for a deposit.

Greetings all, I like this topic.

I have a particular client, whom, his first item to be framed at our store was a signed photo of Wayne Gretzsky and a signed hockey puck. He left the items with me, I made selections, and called him in. After showing him the burlwood frame with an inlaid liner frame, triple linen mats with fillet to match inlaid frame, internal plexi box idea, and told him I'd have a plaque made as well, he agreed to the order.
This gentleman has framed 7 pieces all signed sports related with me so far, and after that first piece, he leaves the pieces with me, his credit card number, and trusts my opinion. His last piece was over $1000.00 for framing a photo of 3 major golf stars and their golf balls in one frame.
His current piece, a signed photo of Jim Brown complete with signed football is $980. I like this man.

Two weeks ago, a woman entered the shop with a multitude of pictures to frame for her home and restaurant. After making selections she said she had to ask her husband. She was home in ten minutes and called me immediately to tell me that he okayed the $3400 order. She told me that she didn't want me to think that my efforts were wasted, and that's why she called me immediately with the news. She dropped the pieces off the next day, and we are doing the work as we speak.

Last saturday, a new client walked in, I was currently with another customer. I said my usual, HI HOW ARE YOU< I"LL BE WITH YOU SHORTLY... bit and what have you. When I started working with her, she told me a friend had recommended us telling her that we had the best selection and most unusual selection, great quality, but that we were expensive. After selecting a frame, I priced it at $840 for the 30x40 double frame. She said, "That's what I was expecting".... I liked this woman as well <G>. I even rushed it for her so she could have it hanging in her dining room for her upcoming party.

I like nice people.

Last week had a favorite client come in who likes funky design at any cost. She informed me that, due to possible slow down, she was there to give me money...and a few items to frame. Then she bought me lunch.

Today, a gentleman was referred to me by another framer for a shadowbox. He grabbed a nice Roma, I pulled a mat, the 14 x 22 frame came to $650. He was thrilled with the price, paid half then I found out he just bought a neighboring Resort/Club/Community. I think I will hand-deliver it and see what else needs to be done.

must be something in the air. i have had my fair share of big spenders in the last week or two. today an artist customer came in with daughter. they had 2 peices that needed framed. they are the kind that want to just play and see what they could come up with. they did their thing...i threw in a few suggestions. they left the items, no questions asked as to what they might price out at. about 30 minutes later, the daughter came back in. she made the remark that she had so much fun playing that she had to go home and get some things that she had had for awhile that needed framed. she is the type that wants something different from the norm. i was able to throw out any idea her way...and she was quite happy with what i showed her. lots of roma frames, fillets, fabric mats, and special effect stuff. she ended up leaving 10 pieces total. again...no questions asked about what it totaled up to. days like the ones i have had of late....makes this job fun fun fun.

Just a thought for those who want something different.....

Our shop sells nothing but Guerrini moulding. It's the company Roma stole from. Yep, stole... the warehouse in Canada, the item numbers, and the Italian contacts... so, for awesome moulding... Check them out.

Just a thought,
Egon
