Hays, Kansas,
I've been looking at a either a used Pistorius or a Morso chopper, which chopper would be the best choice? The Pistorius has an extra set of blades and the 60 inch measuring arm, the Morso has neither. They are priced $225 apart. Randy J.

Randy - personally I believe that either of them will work for you. Morso has the name for foot choppers and they are just about bullet proof - just about everybody I know has the Morso. I have a Jyden myself but have worked with a Morso several times, I couldn't tell the difference of quality. I do not know of anybody that has a Pistorius but I have seen them advertised a couple of times. You can purchase the 60" arm for the Morso for a little more money. If I had the choice I believe I would buy the Morso with the arms for both sides even if it did cost extra. I like the idea of having a popular machine that is easier to find parts for if it breaks down. If you contact Superior Moulding here in Minneapolis and speak to Jim I believe that he has a good used Morso with extra knives and both extension arms for sale - at least he did about 2 weeks ago. His number is 952-922-7914. Joe

Randy, the Pistorius is a re-badged Morso. If they were new, they'd be identical.

Next question

OK, guys, thanks for the replies, it helps me quite a lot. For my next "rookie" question. How important is it to have a hot/cold/vaccum press? For a start up, home operation. It's been said that some of you would reccomend mounting everything using conservation mounting. If so what advantage is a hot/cold press? Randy J. (not the CPF :D)

Randy, I'm a home based framer and have a VacuSeal 4468H heated vacuum press. I wouldn't be without it any longer but when I first started I had very little need for it and if I did need something mounted I brought it to one of my suppliers. I was able to pick up this vacuum press cheap so I got it and haven't been sorry. To answer your question, do you need one? It all depends on how much mounting you can do. I mount for a couple of other framers and photographers in the area so it pays for me. The one suggestion I would make is if you do purchase one go with a vacuum with heat. I have worked with just the heated press and was no where as near satisfied as I am with this. I'm sure there will be some opinions from a few other framers which is good, I know that one of the most popular frame shops here in Minneapolis only has I believe the Master Press 510 made by Seal. It is a heated press but I think it takes a lot more work to get the quality of the vacuum heat press. Joe

I just bought a Corona 40X60 heat/vac press, and moved it into my garage today (also home based). I'm looking forward to doing quality mounting work with it.

You're kidding, right Deac? Did you actually buy a Corona? Good luck.
